Despite All That (1999)

It’s coming up to competition time for the pretty office girls of the Kara Cosmetics Company. Kei (Junko Asahina) and her co-workers are preparing their amateur rhythmic gymnastics team for an upcoming competition. In order to assist the sexy ladies, Aoki (Funasaku Sasairi) is brought in as their new coach. As the team wonders about the coach’s ability to perform both on and off the court, Kei’s relationship with him is revealed. Long ago, Aoki slept with Kei before a competition and she lost. Now, he’s worried it will happen again! Can the coach overcome his sexual issues and help Kei win this time?

Three characters' stories are all woven together in a complex web of depravity and sexual obsession as their lives randomly cross paths and give an insight into a back-story that drives it all forth.

The twelfth shogun, Ieyoshi, embraces Oruri day and night under the care of Fujioka, a guest attendant at the O-oku. However, Fujioka's senior, Kumoi, who recommends Oseki to him, is not amused at all. The scene between Fujioka and Kumoi was symbolic of the battle between women in the O-oku. Fujioka hears from Orui that she is pregnant and rejoices that she has nothing to fear if she bears the Shogun's child. Meanwhile, Kumoi comforts Bure, who is a lesbian, and asks Oseki to help her get a call from the shogun.

Oshichi (Setsuko Ogawa), the daughter of a green grocer, is only seventeen years old but is known as one of the most beautiful girls in Edo. She is betrothed to Sakubei (Tatsuya Hamaguchi) but does not love him. One day, the whole city is flooded by one of the worst rain storm in its history. Oshichi, and her parents are given shelter at a temple where she meets Kichisaburo (Ryuji Mori), a young priest. It is love at first sight for both of them. The storm finally abates. Oshichi's parents decide to return to their home on the following day. That night, Oshichi gladly gives herself to Kichisaburo but they are found by her mother who warns them never to divulge their secret. Learning that her plan to move up the date of her marriage to the rich pawnbroker's son, Oshichi feels that she can never be united with Kichisaburo unless she takes things into her own hands.
