Durante 16 años el conjunto musical de Manuel Vega ha intentado ganar el Festival más importante del mundo de música de acordeón, el Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata en Valledupar. Año tras año Manuel ha ocupado el segundo o tercer puesto, pero nunca el premio más importante de todos, el de Rey Vallenato. Un día le llega una invitación para tocar junto a la legendaria orquesta de acordeones de la Hohner, en la Selva Negra alemana. Manuel y sus amigos, Jairo Suarez y Dionisio Bertel emprenden un viaje épico a este país lejano, un viaje que les cambiará la vida para siempre y con el cual Manuel ahora espera ser el nuevo Rey Vallenato.

It’s December 1999, and 25-year-old Jonah has just graduated from film school. As the new millennium begins, Jonah marries his longtime sweetheart Lila. Over the course of six months, the couple meet a number of interesting people, including Irina, an exiled Russian actress, as well as spending their time with Jonah’s sister Cecile and his filmmaking mentor Anziano. The discussions Jonah has with these friends and strangers help him to gain some perspective on his life and the new millennium.

Aurélien and Argine have never been able to leave each other. Brother and sister, they have always lived together. Aurélien secretly makes ends meet for them by dealing in stolen metal. One night, his accomplice Simon suddenly arrives.

In Bucharest on a winter’s morning, a couple make love. Adina wants to move in with her boyfriend Radu as soon as possible. He, on the other hand, is slightly more reluctant but appears to simply tolerate her plans. Today is New Year’s Eve and Radu and Adina have a lot to do: the two have planned a visit to Adina’s parents followed by a party with friends. While buying last-minute gifts at the supermarket, Radu thinks he spots ex-girlfriend Nadja, who he has never forgotten. In one small moment, Radu’s insecurities about Adina come bubbling to the surface. No sooner have the corks begin to pop, the relationship comes to an abrupt end. This is followed by the perfectly timed offer from Radu’s friend Alex to hit the town with him and his friends. Radu accepts the offer in the hope that Nadja is also out. Director Paul Negogescu draws a portrait of Radu with precision and subtle irony – and captures the atmosphere of a New Year’s evening with great authenticity.
