Sinopsis
A bruised and battered corpse in Shibuya, Tokyo has the attention of the local cops. A veteran detective is assigned to the case. The last utterance of the victim is one clue that detective Imanishi has to work on. Yet, the case becomes more tangled quickly. Elsewhere, a prodigy named Waga Eiryo is composing an orchestral piece.
El título original de este film era "El chico que vendía palomas", pero los productores lo cambiaron por "Calle de amor y esperanza", contra los deseos del director. Un joven llamado Masao, huérfano de padre, vive con su madre enferma y su pequeña hermana. Para mantener a su familia, Masao trabaja como limpiabotas y como vendedor de palomas. Como son palomas mensajeras, vuelven con él una y otra vez de modo que puede revenderlas.
Birdie, un joven ladrón de libros, es sorprendido mientras roba por una supuesta dependienta llamada Umeko, que lo lleva en presencia del dueño de la librería. La noche siguiente los dos jóvenes hacen el amor, pero Umeko, que es virgen, se queda desilusionada. A partir de ahí inician la búsqueda del placer sexual y para ello recurren a un sexólogo, mientras un grupo de actores debaten sobre las claves del placer. El film, que empieza en blanco y negro, mezcla arrebatos de color, música popular, sexo, psicoanálisis y surrealismo.
