Soviet engineer Kuznecov is coming to Prague as an expert on work with the tunneling shield in construction of the metro. He is returning after more than thirty years. In May 1945 as a young soldier in the Red Army he was seriously injured in the liberation of Prague and while recovering experienced a great love with a young teacher called Vera.

The gamekeeper Straka lives by himself in the Bohemian forest hill. He has quarreled with his only son. He cannot come to terms with the fact that his son has abandoned his beloved forests and settled in a town. He has never even met his grandson Vasek. Following an illness, however, little Vasek needs some country air, and so one day his mother Jarmila delivers him to her father-in-law's cottage. At first Straka is angry, but Vasek is an unaffected lad and throws himself with verve into all the little adventures that the forest provides.

El guion de Jaromil Jires y Milan Kundera está basado en la novela de este último, la primera de sus novelas de éxito mundial. Este guion, en donde no dudaron en cortar o cambiar algunas escenas, es considerado como la mejor adaptación de una obra de Kundera. La película se comenzó a rodar en 1967, incluso antes de la aparición del libro, y se terminó de rodar después de la llegada de los tanques soviéticos en 1968.
