Astronautas ingleses y norteamericanos viajan a bordo de la nave espacial "Churchill", en misión científica para estudiar el cometa Halley, que se acerca a la Tierra. Antes de llegar a su destino, encuentran una nave extraterrestre que viaja en la cola del cometa. La nave atrae la curiosidad de los astronautas quienes, al mando del comandante de la misión, se lanzan a su investigación. En el interior hallan tres recipientes de cristal, cada uno de los cuales contiene a un ser de aspecto humano y saludable. Esto desencadenará un alucinante caos en Londres.
