En Cartagena de Indias, Sofía Carreño descubre tener una comunicación paranormal con el espíritu del venezolano Dr. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros fallecido en 1919. Sofía tendrá que enfrentarse no solo a su familia sino a médiums falsos y espíritus oscuros que intentarán evitar que cumpla su misión de servicio.

Durante los años 50, entre los cerros aledaños a un poblado campesino, vive la viuda Nicolasa junto a sus hijos. La mujer, con las necesidades afectivas propias de la viudez, y sobre todo para que sus hijos conozcan algo de mundo, decide encaminar río abajo. Comienzan su travesía, con la contrariedad de que llegan al pueblo topándose con una casa de puta donde los muchachos quedan inmediatamente prendados de las jóvenes, sin saber que éstas se dedican al viejo oficio, ya que aleccionadas por la regenta de la casa, Doña Rebeca, las muchachas deben guardar las apariencias: Nicolasa es su hermana y por ningun motivo debe descubrir a qué se ha dedicado todos estos años.
