Clive (Adrien Brody) y Elsa (Sarah Polley) son dos brillantes científicos que, por medio de la ingeniería genética, se dedican a crear variaciones de especies conocidas. Aunque han alcanzado el éxito, su ambición les hará perder el control, cuando, en secreto, decidan llevar sus experimentos más allá de la moral. Combinando ADN humano en sus experimentos genéticos obtendrán un nuevo escalón en el árbol evolutivo actual.

El film narra la historia de una prisión espacial de alta seguridad(llamada “Dante 01“) que orbita un planeta llamado Dante, y adonde sólo envían a los psicópatas más peligrosos, pero no para encerrarles de por vida entre rejas, sino para utilizarles como cobayas humanas en extraños y terribles experimentos. Hasta que un día, César (Dominique Pinon), uno de los reclusos allí, decide liderar una rebelión que acabe con todo lo llevado a cabo en ese lugar, hasta que llega Saint Georges (Lambert Wilson), un misterioso prisionero poseído por una fuerza secreta que, cuando aprenda a controlar, empleará para acabar con la hostilidad de sus compañeros presos y liberarlos de la maligna atracción de Dante.

Diane Siprien (Monica Bellucci) es una científica francesa que adopta a un niño en una región próxima a Mongolia. Pasado cierto tiempo, empiezan a ocurrir hechos extraños, como la aparición de una marca en el pecho del pequeño. Aunque el médico no le da importancia, Diane empieza a sospechar que quienes la rodean llevan mucho tiempo esperando algo relacionado con su hijo. A dark and claustrophobic film, this brutal, tragic, gut-wrenching drama is set almost totally within the confines of a ship's cargo container that is only 25 square meters in size. It is the grim story of six ill-fated refugees trying to get to Canada from a port in France. The police are in hot pursuit when the septet of strangers are stowed away in the huge metal box. The refugees -- two men, two women and two children -- are of various backgrounds including Gypsy, Russian and Arab. The first of many problems occurs when a mother and daughter arrive with no food (they lost it during a chase). The one Russian refugee, Roman, declares that they should not be allowed to board the ship, but the other three refugees allow them in. Their ordeal begins when the ship breaks down in Liverpool.

Along the Black Sea coast, we see a man and a woman arguing. They are apparently vacationers. Before long, the man has gotten back into their car and driven off, stranding the woman in a remote area. She hitches a ride with a delivery truck driver. At one of his stops, she gets off his truck to go to get some water. When the driver comes back to his truck and sees her gone, he assumes she has found another ride, and leave her. Once again, she is stranded. This time, the location is a lighthouse. She and the keeper have no recourse but to become acquainted, and for the next few days, that is what they do. Eventually, the man who left her in the lurch comes back to look for her, and finds her at the lighthouse.
