　50年代のスウェーデン。主人公のイングマル少年は、兄と病気の母親、愛犬シッカンと暮らしている。父親は、仕事で南洋の海に出かけたままずっと帰ってこない。人工衛星に乗せられて地球最初の宇宙旅行者になったあのライカ犬の運命を思えば、どんな事だってたいしたことはないと考えるのが彼の人生哲学だ。やがて夏になり、母親の病状が悪化。イングマルは一人、田舎に住む叔父の元に預けられることになる。その村の住人は、一風変わった人ばかり。街に置いてきたシッカンのことが気になるものの、男の子のふりをしている女の子・サガとも仲良くなり、毎日を楽しく過ごすイングマルだったが…。

フィラデルフィアの下町。無名ボクサーのロッキーは本業だけでは食えず、借金の取りたてを請け負って日銭を稼いでいた。そんなある日、世界チャンピオンのアポロが気まぐれで無名選手にチャンスを与えようと言い出し、無作為に選んだロッキーを挑戦者に指名する。降って湧いたチャンスを得て、ロッキーは想いを寄せる女性エイドリアンに、15ラウンド最後まで戦いぬくことで自分の愛を証明すると約束する。

激戦を続けてきた影響で脳に損傷が見つかり、ボクシングからの引退を余儀なくされたロッキー。その上税理士の財産使い込みが発覚、破産したロッキーはかつて暮らした下町で無一文から再出発することになる。そんなある日、彼の前に若いボクサー、トミーが現われる。粗削りながらその才能に気付いたロッキーはトレーナーを引き受け、トミーは気鋭のボクサーに成長。だがマスコミはトミーを「ロッキーの操り人形」と書き立てる。
