南北戦争終結後、かつて敵同士であった南軍、北軍の二人の大佐がメキシコへ向かう道程で困難に立ち向かいながら互いに協力し合って行く西部劇。 南北戦争終結直後、旧北軍と旧南軍の大佐が、互いに協力しながら困難に立ち向かっていく西部劇。北軍大佐だったトーマスは部下たちと3000頭の馬を率いてメキシコへ向かっていた。一方、同じくメキシコヘ向かっていた旧南軍大佐のラングドン一行は途中、盗賊に狙われるが、トーマスの事前の忠告と協力で窮地を救われる。友情で結ばれた2人は目的の場所を目指すが…。

ゴジラシリーズ第16作。ゴジラ生誕30周年記念として前作から9年振りに制作された。1975年まで制作された「昭和シリーズ」との繋がりはなく、第1作(1954年)「ゴジラ」の直接の続編としてリブートされた、俗に言う「平成シリーズ」の第1作。大黒島沖で遭難した漁船の生存者・奥村は荒れ狂う嵐の中で巨大な怪物の姿を目撃していた。奥村を救助した東都日報の牧は生物学者・林田の助言を求めるが、林田は30年前に帝都を襲撃し東京湾で葬られたゴジラが目覚めたと推測。はたしてゴジラは復活していた。ソ連原潜を沈め、静岡井浜原発に現れると放射能を吸収し海へと消えたゴジラ。だがそれは破滅へのプロローグでしかなかった。
