舞台は19世紀のイギリス。科学技術が目覚しい発展を遂げていた時代。マンチェスターに住むレイは、オハラ財団に出向したため渡米している発明家の祖父ロイドと父エドワードと同じく、発明が好きな少年だった。

西暦2740年。宇宙を守る任務を帯びたエージェントのヴァレリアンとローレリーヌは、星から星へと飛び回り、あらゆる種族が共存する“千の惑星都市・アルファ”へ派遣される。しかし、その深部には謎の放射線反応が見られ、“アルファ”は滅亡の危機にあった。「10時間以内にその原因を究明せよ」という極秘ミッションを託された2人の前に突如現れたのは、30年前に消えたはずの惑星の住人たちだった。

Josie, Melody and Val are three small-town girl musicians determined to take their rock band out of their garage and straight to the top, while remaining true to their look, style and sound. They get a record deal which brings fame and fortune but soon realize they are pawns of two people who want to control the youth of America. 物語の舞台は1958年のアメリカ合衆国。大学を卒業したばかりのノーヴィル・バーンズは、ニューヨークに出て職探しに励む。経験の無さからなかなか仕事が見つからなかったが、ようやくハッドサッカー社の郵便室に職を得た。一方、ハッドサッカー社の社長ウェアリング・ハッドサッカーは、何を思ったのか会議中に重役室の窓から身投げをしてしまう。取締役シドニー・J・マスバーガーはこれを好機と見て会社の買収に動き出す。会社の株価を下げるため間抜けを社長に据える必要の出たマスバーガー。そんな彼が新社長に選んだのは、青二才のノーヴィルだった。

It is happening all across America-rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from an energy company wanting to lease their property. Reason? The company hopes to tap into a reservoir dubbed the "Saudi Arabia of natural gas." Wearing a coal-dust mask, they become ghostlike creatures. An endless line of trucks will transport all the coals and iron ores to the iron works. There traps another crowd of souls, being baked in hell. In the hospital, time hangs heavy on miners' hands. After decades of breathing coal dust, death is just around the corner. They are living the reality of purgatory, but there will be no paradise.
