アメリカ西部の原野、ハンターのヒュー・グラスは狩猟の最中に熊の襲撃を受けて瀕死の重傷を負うが、同行していた仲間のジョン・フィッツジェラルドに置き去りにされてしまう。かろうじて死のふちから生還したグラスは、自分を見捨てたフィッツジェラルドにリベンジを果たすべく、大自然の猛威に立ち向かいながらおよそ300キロに及ぶ過酷な道のりを突き進んでいく。
