1984年、イギリス北部の炭坑町。11歳のビリーは炭坑労働者のパパと兄トニー、おばあちゃんと暮らしていた。ある日、ビリーの通うボクシング教室のホールにバレエ教室が移ってきた。ふとしたことからレッスンに飛び入りしたビリーは、バレエに特別な開放感を覚えるのだった。教室の先生であるウィルキンソン夫人もビリーに特別な才能を見出した。それからというものビリーはバレエに夢中になるのだが……。バレエ・ダンサーを目指す少年の姿を描いたS・ダルドリー監督の長編第1作。

ピューリッツァ賞を受賞したＨ・リーの『ものまね鳥を殺すには』を劇作家Ｈ・フートが脚色（オスカー受賞）、後に「サンセット物語」や「レッド・ムーン」などの社会派ドラマを多く手掛ける製作パクラ＝監督マリガンのコンビが映画化した問題作。不況の風吹く１９３２年、南部のアラバマ州。幼い息子と娘を抱える弁護士フィンチに、暴行事件で訴えられた黒人トムの弁護の任が下る。だが偏見根強い町の人々は黒人側に付いたフィンチに冷たく当たるのだった……。映画はフィンチの子供たちを通して、父親の苦難や町の横暴を極めて客観的に描く事に成功しており、問題意識を振りかざさず、しんみりと心に染み入らせるものになっている。ペックは心強い父親像をよく出しており、アカデミーの主演男優賞に輝いた。黒人弁護のストーリーと並行して、近所に住む精神異常者ブー（Ｒ・デュヴァル）と子供たちの関係も描出されるが、これが物語の終息で融合し、映画に深い余韻を持たせている。
