Peugeot Barbecue
Vieil édenté
A young peasant, Boubacar, owner of a corn field, wants to break free of his wretched existence and has an idea for a new job. He sells his field and uses the money to buy a broken-down old Peugeot 504 from an European couple. Boubacar wants to try his hand at being a bush taxi driver. But very soon, he sees that his dream cannot become reality : the engine of the old jalopy dies on him. Boubacar is ruined. His wife is forced into prostitution in the corn fields to meet the family's needs. But Boubacar is a resourceful, philosophical man. He strips the car down and uses the engine of the 504 as a barbecue to sell grilled corn in the streets. His hopes of being rich are renewed.
Black Dju
Joseph Touré
This standard slice-of-life drama is about Dju Dibonga (Richard Courcet), a young man who leaves his home on Cabo Verde, an island of Portuguese dependency off the coast of Africa, to go to Luxembourg and search for his father. Far from his home village and unfamiliar with the large city, the young black man forms an unlikely friendship with a down-and-out white policeman whose only consolation in life is found at the bottom of a bottle. Their developing companionship forms the main focus of this movie directed by Pol Cruchten.
Tree of Blood
Calacalado
Done in the style of an African folk tale, this film, a collaboration between European and African countries, is said to be among the most elaborate, high tech film in African film. Exquisitely photographed and filled with archetypal figures to create a poetic look at nature's revenge against those who would exploit her. It is set in the forest village of Amanha Lundju, a place where the birth of children is celebrated by the planting of a tree. The trees are considered spiritual twins. But for every tree planted, the rapacious state destroys many more for firewood and lumber.
