The film is set in the desert, and tells a tale between a mine owner and several money-mad people who want to buy his mine. The mine owner spends 10 years trying to find gold in the mine, while fending off people's attempts to take it over. In the end, the forces of nature and human triumph over greed. スン・リーインは男の子を持つ母親。しかしその息子ジョン・ダーは聴覚に障害を持っており、夫はそのことが原因で彼女のもとを去って行った。残されたスン・リーインは、改めて息子ジョン・ダーを立派に育てると決意するのだった。彼女はそれまでの安定した収入を諦めてでも、子どもとの時間をより多く持てる仕事をと、新聞配達を始める。そして、ジョン・ダーに対して言葉を教え、世界中のあらゆる音を彼に伝えようと心に誓う。だが、スン・リーインの思いとは裏腹に、聴覚障害を持つ子どもに対して、世間の風は決して温かいものではなかった。
