O-Shin is a young brothel worker who, one night, helps a young samurai escape from his pursuers. Against the warnings of her fellow workers, particularly Kikuno and the brothel's owner, O-Shin falls in love with the samurai.

When a young man is sent to a prison workhouse for a crime he did not commit his friend on the outside must find evidence to clear his name.

飢饉による不景気で貧窮生活を余儀なくされていた天保末期の江戸。とある貧乏長屋で5人の子供を育てる気丈夫な母おかつ。だがおかつの家では一家総出で働いてかなりの金を貯め込んでるという噂があった。ある夜、その噂を聞きつけた若い男・勇吉が泥棒に入るが、勇吉と出くわしたおかつは怯えることもなく、彼に金を貯めている理由を語った。それは長男の友人である源さんが、盗みの罪を償って牢から出てきた時のための支度金だったのだ。おかつの姿に我が身を恥じる勇吉だが、おかつはそんな勇吉を家に招き入れるのだった……。

The story takes place in feudal Japan, when any commerce with the rest of the world was strictly prohibited. An idealist suddenly appears in an isolated inn (the one that the title refers to), the head-quarters of a group of smugglers, with stolen money intended to ransom his loved one who is forced to work in a brothel.

This film follows the daily lives of a group of people barely scraping by in a slum on the outskirts of Tokyo. Yet as desperate as their circumstances are, each of them—the homeless father and son envisioning their dream house; the young woman abused by her uncle; the boy who imagines himself a trolley conductor—finds reasons to carry on.

A carpenter, Shigetsugu, learns a lesson of love and humanity from five orphaned children and an affectionate woman named Oritsu. It's a winning combination of drama and humor. The warm friendship that grows between the carpenter, the woman and the children making this into a true masterpiece.
