제주의 일제 동굴진지와 4.3과 관련된 동굴들, 그 동굴이 품은 바다 이미지를 다각도로 들여다보았다. 밖에서 동굴을 들여다보는 것은 검고 어두운 카메라의 내부를 들여다보는 것 같았고, 그 안에 들어가서 밖을 보면 동굴의 입구 형태만큼 스크린이 되었다.

2009년 아버지가 돌아가시자, 일본에 남은 것은 어머니와 딸 뿐이었다. 혼자 사는 노모가 걱정된 딸은 매달 도쿄에서 오사카의 본가를 찾아가기 시작한다. 그러한 딸에게 어머니는, 문득 당신이 제주 4.3의 체험자라는 말을 꺼낸다. 아무에게도 말하지 않은 채 가슴 속 깊은 곳에 묻어둔 기억이 다시 숨을 쉬기 시작한다. 절대로 남에게 말하지 말라고 당부하면서 어머니는 자신이 제주 4.3에 어떻게 관련되었는지 구체적으로 이야기하기 시작하는데···.​

Immediately after liberation, an incident called 'Jeju Uprising' took place on Jeju Island, the Hawaii of Korea, under the control of the US military government. As a result, about one-tenth of the total population of the island at that time was sacrificed. The children who survived the massacre record the memories of that day in an animated film 70 years later.

다섯 명의 할머니, 그중 네 분은 제주4.3으로 인해 전주형무소를 다녀오셨다. 그들 모두는 1948년 4.3이 일어날 무렵엔 스무 살 내외의 젊은이들이었다. 4.3 와중에 재판 없이 형무소로 보내진 사람들, 그중에서도 특히 여성으로서, 이분들이 겪었던 일들을 듣다 보면 4.3의 윤곽이 떠오른다. 한 인간이 감내하기에는 너무나 버거운 일들을 겪었음에도 이분들은 계속 살아오셨다는 것에 보는 사람은 말할 수 없는 감정을 느낄 뿐이다.​

섬에 살던 아홉 살 소녀 완순은 75년 전 학살에서 살아남았다. 아물지 못한 경험에는 밑줄이 그어지고, 소녀는 기억에 남은 붉은색들을 빨간 색연필로 그리기 시작한다.

4.3 항쟁의 구술 작가인 양경인과 한국으로 유학 온 르완다인 파치스가 마주 보고 대화한 다음 나란히 손을 잡고 여행을 떠난다. 세대도 국적도 하는 일도 다른 두 사람은 대학살 생존자의 딸이라는 공통점이 있다.

해방이후 남한에서의 민간인 집단학살은 1946월 8월 화순탄광사건과 대구 10월항쟁으로 시작됐다. 미군정 치하에서 발생해 남한 전역으로 확대된 대구 ‘10월 항쟁’은 “식량난이 심각한 상태에서 미군정이 친일관리를 고용하고 토지개혁을 지연하며 식량 공출 정책을 강압적으로 시행하는 것에 불만을 가진 민간인과 일부 좌익 세력이 경찰과 행정 당국에 맞서 발생한 사건”이었다. 이 사건은 항일독립군을 토벌하고 고문•처형했던 친일반민족행위자들이 청산되지 않고 미군정에 의해 경찰과 국가기관의 수장이 되면서 이후 자행될 민간인학살의 전주곡이었고, 반역사의 시작이었다. 숙청되어야 할 친일반민족행위자들이 미군정과 이승만에 기대여 살 길을 찾은 것이 바로 공산주의자 척결이었다. 이들은 자신의 친일행적을 가리고 생존을 위해 반정부주의자, 좌익세력, 민족주의자를 제거하기 시작했다. 1946년 미군정의 여론조사에 따르면 남한 주민들의 78%가량이 사회주의를 원했고, 14% 가량만이 자본주의를 원했다. 이런 상황에서 국민의 지지를 받지 못한 이승만 정권은 친일파와 우익인사를 기용해 정치적 걸림돌이 되는 집단과 민간인을 학살했다. 1947년부터 불거진 제주 4.3항쟁과 1948년 여순사건을 거치면서 이승만 정권은 보수우파와 좌익세력을 제거하며 본격적인 반공국가 건설에 들어간다. 한국전쟁이 발발하면서 민간인 대량학살은 본격화 된다. 좌익인사를 선도하고 계몽하기 위해 설립한 국민보도연맹은 한국전쟁 초기에 대량 학살 대상이 됐다. 친일 출신의 군인과 경찰은 자신의 생존을 위해 더욱 참혹한 학살극을 벌인 측면도 있다. 한국전쟁으로 전시작전권을 이양 받은 미국도 민간인학살의 주체가 되었다. 이 시기 퇴각하던 인민군과 내무서, 지방좌익에 의해서도 민간인학살은 자행됐다.

제주시 애월읍 납읍에 살고 계신 강상희 할머니, 할머니의 남편 김봉수는 4.3으로 희생되었다. 해군기지 문제로 떠들썩한 서귀포시 강정마을. ‘4.3의 원혼이 통곡한다’ 와 같은 수많은 현수막이 제주 4.3과 해군기지 문제가 다르지 않음을 말한다. 카메라는 유령처럼 제주도 납읍리, 가시리, 강정마을, 일본 오사카 등을 돌며 그 흔적과 균열들을 드러내기 시작하고 다시 강상희 할머니가 혼자 살고 있는 집 앞마당으로 돌아온다. 언제부터인지 알 수 없지만 잠자리 밑에 녹슨 톱을 두고 살아온 할머니의 삶... 가늠할 수 없는 깊은 슬픔을 짊어진 제주도와 제주사람들의 삶에서 녹슨 톱은 언제쯤 치워질 수 있을까.

2003년 10월 15일, 한적한 가을의 어느 고층 아파트. 한가로이 베란다 화초에 물을 주는 황가. 그리고 같은 시간. 도시 변두리의 낡은 집에서 살아가는 60대 노인의 형민. TV 지방뉴스에서 흘러나오는 ‘제주4.3사건 진상보고서 확정 소식’은 두 노인의 닮아있지만 서로 다른 과거를 회상한다.

1948년 11월, 제주섬 사람들은 ‘해안선 5km 밖 모든 사람을 폭도로 여긴다’는 흉흉한 소문을 듣고 삼삼오오 모여 피난길에 오른다. 도대체 무슨 일이 어디서부터 일어나고 있는지 영문도 모른 채 산 속으로 피신한 마을 사람들은 곧 돌아갈 생각으로 따뜻한 감자를 나눠먹으며 장가갈 걱정, 집에 두고 온 돼지걱정 등 소소한 이야기를 늘어놓으며 웃음을 잃지 않는데...

In early 1913 as Thanhouser staff and crews were setting up a facility in Los Angeles, cameraman Carl Louis Gregory was taking documentary footage, from which four “split reel” short subjects were created: A MILLION BIRDS, filmed at California pigeon and ostrich farms; LOS ANGELES THE BEAUTIFUL (two different version with the same title), showing scenic attractions; and SEVEN AGES OF AN ALLIGATOR, filmed at an alligator farm. Released together, HIS UNCLE'S WIVES and SEVEN AGES OF AN ALLIGATOR filled up one 1,000-foot “split reel.” (Fandor)
