라이언은 12살 때 비행기에서 우연히 제니퍼란 동갑내기 여자아이의 옆자리에 앉게 된다. 그리고 이때부터 이 둘의 운명적 만남이 계속된다. 고등학교때 이웃 고등학교간의 미식축구경기에서 다시 만난 이들은 하나는 치어리더로 또 하나는 많은 사람들 앞에서 우스갯거리가 되는 덜떨어진 고등학생이 되어 있다. 두 사람은 서로의 첫 만남을 기억해내곤 다시 곧바로 헤어진다. 세번째의 만남은 버클리 대학에서이다.
