프랑스 남부의 디스코 클럽에서 DJ로 일하는 미국인 잭은 며칠 동안의 휴식을 갖기 위해 파리로 온다. 댄스홀에서 만난 매력적인 프랑스 여인 수지. 그녀의 아파트라는 곳에서 뜨거운 하룻밤을 보낸 잭은 다음날 아침에서야 모든 사실을 알게 된다. 그녀의 아파트는 온데간데 없고 자신이 가구점의 한 침대에 누워있음을 깨달은 순간 탁자에 놓인 담배만 챙겨 황급히 그곳을 빠져나온다. 빈털터리가 되어 휴가를 망친 그는 허탈한 기분으로 집에 돌아온다. 문앞에서 낯선 이웃여인 브리짓과 마주치게 된 잭은 커피한잔 나누자는 그녀의 제의를 받아들인다. 정숙하고 우아한 여인의 모습은 사라지고 남자에 굶주린 야수처럼 그녀는 맹돌격 해온다. 잭의 담배는 브리짓의 손을 거쳐 꼬리에 꼬리를 물고 이사람 저사람으로 옮겨다닌다.

카르멘은 군부대 낙하산을 만드는 공장에서 일하고 있는 여인으로 같은 부대에서 일하고 있는 '조'라는 상병을 짝사랑한다. 하지만 조에게는 오래 전부터 사귀던 신디 루라는 애인이 있었다. 어느 날 신디 루가 조를 면회 온다. 조는 신디 루에게 청혼을 하고 교목 앞에서 곧바로 식을 올리기로 약속한다. 바로 그 시간, 카르멘과 동료 여직공 사이에 싸움이 일어나고 조에게 카르멘을 메이슨빌까지 후송하라는 상부의 명령이 떨어진다. 결혼식을 하자는 약속을 뒤로 한 채 성급히 메이슨빌로 향하던 조는 강가에 차가 쳐 박히는 사고를 당하는 바람에 카르멘의 집까지 함께 가게 된다. 이곳에서 조는 카르멘의 유혹을 참지 못하고 결국 두 사람은 하룻밤을 같이 보내게 된다. 그 다음날 아침, 카르멘은 자신을 용서해 달라는 쪽지 한 장을 남긴 채 조를 떠나고 조는 그 책임을 물어 감옥살이를 하게 된다. 조는 감옥에서도 카르멘을 못 잊어 그리워하고 결국 출감 후 그녀와 재회한다. 한편 당대 최고의 권투 선수인 허스키가 카페에서 카르멘을 한번 보고 반하여 그녀를 시카고로 초청한다. 카르멘과 말다툼을 벌이던 와중에 상사를 폭행한 조는 결국 카르멘과 함께 시카고로 도주한다. 카르멘은 시카고에서 다시 허스키를 만나고 가난한 조와 여관방 생활에 싫증이 난 그녀는 점점 변심하기 시작한다. 카르멘의 변심을 눈치 챈 조는 자신에게 돌아올 것을 부탁하지만 카르멘은 아예 조를 떠나버린다. 질투와 분노에 눈이먼 조. 그는 권투장에서 허스키를 응원하고 있는 그녀를 납치해 결국 그녀를 목졸라 죽이고 자신은 헌병대에 붙잡혀간다.
