캘리포니아 대학의 젊은 지성 아담(Adam Gaines: 마이클 더글러스 분)은 학문과 현실에서 담담함과 부자유스러움을 느낀다. 자신에게 몰려드는 여자들에게도 싫증을 느낀 아담은 미주리의 한적한 시골에서 있은 삼촌의 장례식에 참석한 뒤, 여름을 그곳에서 보내기로 하고 전력 회사의 막노동꾼으로 취직한다. 때론 생명까지 위협하는 이 일에 오히려 희열을 느끼던 아담은 같은 회사에 있는 제리(Jerri Jo Hopper: 리 퍼셀 분)라는 처녀와 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 시간이 지나면서 아담은 또 다시 현실에서 도피처를 찾게 되고, 주변 사람들로부터 탈피하고자 방황을 계속한다.

"황야의 일곱 남자"들은 멕시코군의 난공불락 감옥을 습격하는 작전을 감행하지만, 중과부적의 격전 중에 헛되이 속속 쓰러지는데….

루크 잭슨(Lucas (Luke) Jackson: 폴 뉴먼 분)은 만취하여 물건을 부수는 바람에 흉악범도 아닌데 중노동형을 선고 받았다. 늙은 죄수들의 리더인 덩치 큰 도라, 그는 새로 들어온 신입죄수 루크의 요령피우는 태도가 걸려 루크에게 격투를 걸었고 승패는 누구의 눈에도 명백하였다. 그러나 의외로 루크가 이겼고 이것으로 동료들 사이에서 인기자가 된다. 형무소 안에서는 소장의 말이 곧 법이었으며 죄수들의 잘못은 결코 용납하지 않는다. 어머니의 죽음으로 인해 2번 탈옥하여 체포된 루크의발에 쇠통이 채워지며 간 수들에게 심한 고문을 당한다. 이 죽음의 감방에서 루크는 기회만을 노린다.
