1900년대 초반, 셀레스틴은 노르망디의 한 가정에서 하녀로 일하기 위해 파리를 떠나온다. 그녀는 노르망디 지방의 유지이자 충실한 왕정복고주의자인 랑레이르의 집에서 일하게 된다. 그런데 그 새로운 가정은 괴이하기 짝이 없다. 집주인인 백작은 집안의 모든 여인을 침대로 끌어들여 임신시키는 고약한 습관을 가지고 있고, 그 부인은 자신의 아들을 집에 붙들어 놓기 위해 셀레스틴을 이용한다. 랑레이르의 집사 또한 셀레스틴을 유혹하고, 랑레이르의 이웃이자 공화당 지지자인 모저 대령도 그녀에게 관심을 가진다. 그러나 정작 셀레스틴의 관심사는 오로지 부유한 남자와 결혼하여 다시는 일 하지 않아도 되는 것이다. 유쾌한 소극와 멜로드라마를 잘 혼합해 놓은 이 영화는 르누아르의 미국시절 최고의 작품 중 하나로 손꼽히는 작품이다. 아버지 오귀스트 르누아르의 절친한 친구이자 후원자였던 옥타베 미르보의 소설을 바탕으로 한 작품으로, 인간사에 있어 비극과 희극은 피할 수 없는 것이라고 보는 르누아르의 생각이 잘 드러나 있다.
