1945년부터 1949년, ‘마오쩌둥’이 이끄는 게릴라 혁명군이 ‘장제스’의 국민당 군을 무찌르고 공산국가를 수립한 역사적 과정을 그린 국가 선전용 드라마이다. 당시 실존 인물의 이름이 그대로 등장하고, 실제 역사적 영상들이 중간중간 삽입되어 사실감을 부여한다. 중국의 슈퍼 스타들과 연기자 170여 명이 출연하여 화제가 된 작품이다.
마이키앙은 등대에서 일하는 30세 전후의 노총각이다. 외롭고 단조로운 생활속에 그는 꿈속에서 종종 첸킹이라는 여자를 만난다. 호텔에서 일하는 첸은 서른도 못되어 남편을 잃고 자신의 아들 과 함께 불운한 삶을 사는 여자다. 어느날 두사람은 만나게 되고 마이는 첸에게 자신과 관계를 맺을 것을 강요한다. 첸이 울자 마이는 심한 자책감을 느낀다. 호텔 지배인 모아저씨는 첸이 강간 당했다고 믿고 마이를 고소한다. 마이는 감옥에 갇히는데 나중에 첸이 강간이 아니라고 증언을 하여 마이는 석방된다. 첸은 세간의 입놀림의 표적이 되고, 그 사실을 알게된 마이는 첸을 찾아간다.
A group of young people from all corners of the country work in a Beijing publishing press. They all live in the same shabby apartment block, where their lives intertwine.

For most of her students, the education that they receive in her classroom is the only preparation they will have for the entrance exams to college-the only avenue out of poor, rural life. Can she balance her needs and the needs of so many young, hopeful people?

Marshal Zhang Xueliang, Commander of the North Eastern Army, grows progressively disillusioned by Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek's policy to engage the Chinese Communist Party rather than fight the Japanese invaders which are occupying Manchuria. Despite numerous pleas, Chiang does not budge. After discussing with fellow general Yang Hucheng, the two take events into their own hands and place Chiang Kai-shek under arrest on December 12, 1936, forcing Chiang into a coalition with the CCP.
