임진왜란으로 나라의 운명이 풍전등화가 되었을 때 세계에서 처음으로 철갑선인 거북선을 만들어 왜적을 무찌른 이순신 장군은 옳지 못한 자들의 모함으로 형벌을 받고서도 나라에 대한 걱정을 하여 의연히 백의종군을 하였으며 부하에게는 엄격하면서도 자유로워 백성들 이 믿고 따르던 장군이었다. 이러한 이순신 장군의 일대기를 난중일기를 바탕으로 그려냈다.

옛날 어느 고을에 콩쥐라는 착한 딸을 가진 선비 최만춘은 상처하여 배씨라는 후처를 맞이한다. 성질이 포악한 배씨는 사사건건 콩쥐를 학대하지만, 천성이 착한 콩쥐는 끝까지 부모에게 효도를 다하고, 신관 사또 김성도와 인연을 맺게 된다.

섬진강 상류에 자리잡은 화갯골에는 주막이 많다. 그중에도 옥화네 집은 값싸고 술맛 좋고 인심 후하다 하여 이름난 주막. 어느 날 예순이 넘어 보이는 책장수 오동운이 열여덟쯤 되어 보이는 딸 계연을 데리고 옥화네 주막을 찾아든다. 책장수 영감은 삼십 여 년 전에는 친구들과 사당패를 꾸며 놀기도 하고 바로 이 화개장터에서 하룻밤만 묵고 갔다는 추억담을 늘어놓는다. 책장수가 딸 계연을 옥화네 주막에 맡겨두고 화갯골로 간 날 옥화의 외아들 성기가 산에서 내려온. 성기는 계연을 처음 보는 순간 이상한 긴장과 흥분을 느낀다. 옥화의 죽은 어미 소향은 남사당의 진양조 가락에 반해 그만 하룻밤 정을 주어 옥화를 배었고 그 남사당을 서른여섯 해 동안 기다리다 죽어갔다. 옥화 역시 기구하게 쌍계사의 젊은 중 법운과 금단의 사랑을 맺어 성기를 낳게 되었고 법운도 바람처럼 종적을 감춘다. 성기의 사주에도 역마살이 끼어 있다고 하여 열 살 나던 해 쌍계사에 맡겨진다. 옥화는 어느 날 우연히 계연의 귓바퀴에 자기 자신과 같은 사마귀가 있음을 발견한다. 옥화는 불길한 예감에 무당을 찾아간다. 그리고 책장수 영감이 옥화의 생부라는 것과 계연이 옥화의 이복동생이라는 이야기를 듣는다. 놀란 옥화는 성기와 계연의 사이를 떼어놓으려 하고 성기는 어머니의 돌변한 경계 태도를 야속하게 여긴다. 책장수 영감이 돌아와 여수에서 부자로 사는 영감의 친구 아들과 정혼하여 계연을 데리고 다시 길을 떠난다고 한다. 계연은 보따리를 들고 영감을 따라나서면서 슬프게 작별을 고한다.

일제의 식민지 정책에 반기를 들고 봉기한 광주학생사건을 중심으로 엮은 항일학생운동사. 독립지사의 아들 상훈은 뜻맞는 교우와 더불어 항일독립운동체인 성진회의 멤버인데 이들의 정신적인 지주는 한문선생 송운인이다. 어느 날 이 성진회에 오빠가 고등계형사인 영애도 가담한다. 그 뒤 여러 가지 사건이 일어난 뒤 거사하기로 결정한 날 밤, 형사에게 발각되어 영애가 오해를 받으나 죽음을 무릅쓴 영애의 행동으로 동지들은 피하게 되고 다음날 아침 광주의 학생들은 모두 봉기한다.
