문재구는 자신을 고향인 섬에 묻어달라는 아버지 문덕배의 유언에 따라 꽃상여를 배에 싣고 섬으로 향한다. 하지만 재구의 친구이자 시인인 김철의 예상대로 섬에 가까워지자 섬 사람들의 맹렬한 반대가 시작되고 배를 섬에 대는 것조차 거부당한다. 가까스로 혼자 섬에 도착한 김철은 너무도 슬프게 아름다웠던 네 여인에 대한 추억과 그 해 여름날의 한 사건을 떠올린다. 1950년 한국전쟁이 일어나던 해 엄마가 없는 김철은 마을 모든 여성들의 품속에서 자란다. 딸이 죽자 정신이 나가 남편에게 버림받는 친구 재구의 어머니 넙도댁의 한과 타고난 색기로 동네 아낙들의 질시를 한몸에 받은 벌떡녀의 끼를 보며 호기심을 키웠으며 무녀가 된 업순네를 졸라 죽은 엄마의 영혼을 만나기도 했다. 하지만 어린 김철에게 가장 따뜻한 꿈과 허무한 죽음을 알게 해준 여자는 마을 아난들이 억지로 시집보내준 날 늙은 서방을 내쫓아버리고 아이들과 놀아주었으며 혼수상태에 빠진 철에게 젖을 물려주었던 바보 옥님이다. 그런 어느날 섬에 난리가 난다. 무장한 인민군들이 동네 사람들 중 반동분자를 색출하기 시작하자 섬사람들은 목숨을 부지하기 위해 이웃을 고발하기까지 한다. 이 모든 사태가 섬에서 쫓겨난 덕배의 농간에서 비롯되었다는 사실을 알게 된 섬사람들은 가슴 속에 큰 한을 안고 살아가게 된다.

Hyun-il and his wife are returning from a fishing trip when they get into a car accident with a drunken man. They end up killing him. They meet with the dead man's wife, Su-jin, to come to an agreement. Su-jin demands their house so they make her to stay in their house temporarily. Mi-young's nerves are on edge due to Su-jin. Mi-young meets Jin, Su-jin's neighbor, and finds out that Su-jin was once a hostess. But Jin tries to rape Mi-young and she ends up killing him. This sends Mi-young over the edge and she is confined to a mental institution. Too late, Su-jin goes to Mi-young to ask for her forgiveness and then she leaves.

Suh Jung-hwan is the head of marketing at a cosmetics company. A year ago, masked robbers raped his wife, Oh Hye-ryung, in front of him. Hye-ryung lives in torment from the memories. Jung-hwan tries to overcome this through his great love for his wife but they're not able to reclaim a normal sex life. Jung-hwan meets a woman named Noh Sung-ah. She is hot for him but Jung-hwan works desperately to stay true to his poor wife. Jang-suk, a young man who likes Sung-ah, decides to go after Hye-ryung after losing Sung-ah. His intentions are money. Ultimately, there is infidelity at the end of Jang-suk's knife and the adulterers fall. Jang-suk also falls to the knife that he himself holds.

Kim Ik-do and his second wife, Hye-mi, are living happily on the deer farm when a new breeder is hired. Hye-mi recognizes him as the ex-boyfriend who betrayed her five years ago. She makes a move on him but he is suffering from amnesia. Through her devoted nursing, he makes a full recovery and regains his memory. He leaves Hye-mi but then returns, demanding her love. Ik-do is furious but ultimately bows to their love. However, the man's wife and young child come looking for him. Hye-mi falls into the embrace of her forgiving husband.

A Korean woman raised in Spain with European values towards life and romance finds living in her ancestral land stifling and it eats away at her vitality.

Bun-nyeo, a girl in a mountain village loses her virginity to Myong-jun, the village vagabond. After both of her suitors die before they can wed Bun-nyeo, she moves to the city to work in a factory. Myong-jun persuades her to return to the village, but he is arrested for murder. As the film ends, Bun-nyeo is waiting for Myong-jun's release.

During the Ching Dynasty, a Buddhist priest named Hung must take a journey to spread the word of Buddha. He takes the holy Scriptures along on his journey to southern China. During Hung's trip one of Dai-kiang's henchmen (Wah-sang), attacks him and steals the sacred documents. Luckily Priest Hung is able to escape from the attackers and meets a fellow northerner, Huang, who swears to aid the holy man. Hung and Huang return to the temple to regroup, where Huang is taught the deadly technique called, Magic Kicks! Armed with this new fighting style Huang embarks on a mission to retrieve the documents. He'll need more then just skill to take on Dai-kiangs army of misfits, but will he find the help he needs?

규화와 진우는 소꼽친구이지만 성격상 차이가 많다. 같은 소꼽친구 미연이는 진우와 단짝이었지만, 성인이 되면서 규화의 적극적인 행동에 그의 포로가 된다. 그러나 출세에 눈이 먼 규화는 진우의 여자친구인 가희가 부잣집 딸임을 알고 그녀를 빼앗는다. 그로인해 성공을 하지만, 마침내 현실이란 거대한 벽에 부딪힌 규화는 연상의 미망인과 과감하게 사랑을 나누고, 자신의 딸을 낳는 미연을 더욱 학대한다. 규화는 아내 가희가 자살을 하고 나서야 잘못을 깨닫고 새 출발을 다짐하게 된다.
