Kujô Sanbongi

This short film depicts the sense of closure of Japan due to COVID-19 through the episodes of three groups of people. A man picks up shards of glass night after night on a moonlit beach. A mysterious girl lies on the edge of the waves. A policeman at a police box along the beach. A young mother searches aimlessly for her missing daughter, and a man works with her. A young man in a rabbit suit who keeps distributing leaflets to find his missing girlfriend. What exactly is the "girl" that each of these people is searching for...?

'미나'는 병에 걸려 시한부 삶을 산다. 그녀는 1941년 12월 7일에 죽는데, 일본이 진주만 공습을 하면서 태평양전쟁이 시작된 날이다. 그래서 그녀는 일본의 도덕성을 상징한다고 하겠다. 또 한 사람 이 영화의 주인공 토시히코인데, 이어지는 장면에서 미나에게 키스하려고 할 때 그녀가 거절한다. 처음에는 둘이 친척 관계라서 그런 줄 알았는데 나중에 밝혀지는 걸 보면 미나는 토시히코의 이모의 죽은 (만주에서 죽었다) 남편의 여동생이다. 그래서 친척 관계는 이유가 아닌 것 같다. 아마 자신이 곧 죽을 것이기 때문에 사랑하지 말라는 뜻인 듯하다. 도덕성을 잃은 조국을 사랑하지 말라는 뜻도 될까. 토시히코는 평생 독신으로 산다. 그의 미나에 대한 감정은 이 마지막 장면에서야 분명히 드러난다.

Shinko (Karin Aiba) is a high school student from Hamamatsu. Due to university admission pressures, she struggles with her mother. She hasn't really made conversation with her mom in a year. Shinko's friend Misato (Mayuu Kusakari) then recommends to her to join the school's calligraphy club. Shinko is impressed by Teacher Yatsushiro's (Kazuki Namioka) words. Teacher Yatsushiro is the one who takes care of the calligraphy club. Shinko decides to join the calligraphy club.

Fifteen-year-old Masaharu (Yanagisawa Daisuke) lives on the small island of Aogashima, which has a population of 197. On the island, life is simple and facilities are spare. As there are no high schools on the island, Masaharu, in his final year of junior high, will be leaving for Tokyo after he graduates. He is the editor of Blue Island Times, the local newspaper he started with a friend, who has hit on hard times in Tokyo. One day, Yuki (Naka Riisa) transfers from the city to his island school, and Masaharu is immediately smitten. As the two grow closer, Masaharu discovers his new friend's secret...

No Pants Girls is a 3 segment film directed by Sono Sion, Shô Tsukikawa and Reiko Saito. They deal with girls discovering sexuality, through their innocent eyes. The actors and actresses are the same in the three films.
