마케도니아의 작은 마을 슈티프에서는 매년 1월 성직자가 나무 십자가를 강에 던지고 수백명의 남자들이 이를 따라 물속에 뛰어든다. 이를 찾는 남자에게는 행운과 번영이 약속된다. 이번에는 충동적으로 입수한 페트루냐가 다른 사람에 앞서 십자가를 거머쥔다. 그녀의 경쟁자들은 격노한다. 의식에 어찌 감히 여자가 끼어들 수 있다는 말인가? 한바탕 난장판이 벌어지지만 페트루냐는 꿈쩍도 하지 않는다. 그녀는 십자가를 쟁취했으며 절대 포기할 생각이 없다.
