1963년, 중국의 작은 마을 부용진. 두부 가게를 경영하는 오금은 마음씨 착한 남편이 있고 마을 사람들도 모두 명랑한 그녀를 좋아한다. 이 마을에는 미곡 관리소 주인인 고연산과 땅 주인인 거리의 문제아 왕추신, 그리고 최고의 인텔리지만 극우로 낙인찍혀 바보처럼 살아가는 진서전 등이 있다. 오금은 피나는 고생 끝에 돈을 모아 가게를 신축한다. 그러나 정치 공작 반장으로 승진한 이국형에 의해 부르조아로 몰리게 된다. 잠시 친척 집으로 몸을 피한 뒤 돌아와 보니 남편은 이미 죽었고 자신은 새로운 부농이라는 낙인이 찍혀있었다. 문화혁명의 바람이 불어닥쳐 이국형이 득세하자 오금과 극우로 몰린 진서전에게 이른 아침 거리의 돌담을 청소하는 일이 주어진다. 두 사람은 죄인으로 일을 하는 가운데 서로를 깊이 이해하고 마침내 동거까지 하게 돼 오금은 아이를 임신하게 된다. 그러나 각각 3년과 10년의 징역을 선고받아 서로 헤어지고, 오금은 혼자 아이를 낳게 된다. 미곡 관리소 주인 고연산이 오금을 도와주어 아이 이름도 자신의 성을 따게 해준다. 세월이 흘러 1979년 마침내 문화혁명은 종결되고 3년의 세월이 흐른 뒤 1982년이 된다. 헤어져 있던 사람들은 다시 만나고 명예회복된 진서전은 부용진으로 돌아와 오금을 부둥켜 안고 회한의 눈물을 흘린다. 그리고 그는 벼슬을 멀리하고 부용진에서 오금과 조용히 살기를 원한다.
