When the Indochinese war sends Louis to Vietnam, Matthais follows Jeanne back to France. A subsequent move to Damascus where Louis is posted as military attache, fails to break their bond.

엘리안느 드브리(Eliane Devries: 까뜨린느 드뇌브 분)는 인도차이나에서 태어난 프랑스인으로 농장에서 라텍스 나무를 키우며 소일하는데, 그곳에는 안남의 황녀였으나 사고로 부모를 잃은 까미유(Camille: 린 당 팜 분)가 양녀로 있었다. 엘리안느는 그녀에게 프랑스 상류 사회식 교육을 시키고 남다른 애정을 베푼다. 그후 프랑스의 해군장교 장 밥띠스뜨(Jean-Baptiste Le Guen: 뱅상 페레 분)는 야망을 갖고 사이공에 오는데 우연히 엘리안느와 만나 뜨거운 관계로 발전한다. 그러나 운명의 장난인지 까미유도 장을 연모하게 된다. 이 사실을 알게 된 엘리안느는 까미유를 서둘러 친족과 결혼시키려고 하나 까미유는 이를 뿌리치고 장을 찾아간다. 그러나 우연한 사건에 말려들어 까미유는 프랑스 장교를 살해하게 되고 유랑 극단에 합류해 피신 생활을 한다. 세상은 혁명의 열기로 달아오르고 이 두 사람은 프랑스군의 추적을 당하게 된다. 혼돈의 역사 속에서 까미유는 장의 아들을 낳게 되고, 장과 엘리안느는 사랑하기 때문에 모든 것을 용서할 수 있다는 마음 가짐으로 다시 한번 운명적인 만남을 갖게 된다.

This drama attempts to be a film within a film. In the outer story, Andre Dussolier stars as a film director working with drama students at the Paris Conservatory, making a film (the inner story) about a woman's obsession with a foreign desert. Wallowing in maudlin sentimentality, this feature fails to live up to the promise of its probable inspiration, Fame (1980), and was not well-received at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival. However, as a medium for instructing director Francis Girod's actual students at the Paris Conservatory about the art and perils of filmmaking, it was undoubtedly a good deal more successful.

Part Two, "The Electric Floor Polisher," is an opera-like story of a woman who is obsessed with polishing her floors. Part Three is a musical interlude featuring Jeanne Moreau singing "When Love Dies." Part Four, "The Virtue of Tolerance," concerns an old man, his young wife, and how they come to terms when she has an affair with a man her own age.

He falls in love with an au pair girl but has a love affair with a married woman, Mrs Courtalès. He kills the husband in self-defense. But eight months later, he is arrested by the Police. 카니발의 열풍이 뜨겁던 전야에 에우리디쎄는 리오에 도착하여 사촌 세라피나를 찾아간다. 동네는 카니발에 선보일 행열 연습으로 떠들썩한데 동네의 우상인 오르페를 알게 되고, 짧은 시간내에 둘은 순수한 사랑을 나누게 된다. 그러나 죽음의 탈을 쓴 한 남자가 에우리디쎄를 계속 쫓아다니며 그녀를 공포에 떨게 한다. 세라피나는 사랑에 빠진 에우리디쎄를 자신의 의상을 입혀 카니발 행렬에 참여하게 하는데 탈을 쓴 남자는 그녀를 알아내고 쫓아간다. 그를 피해 도망치던 에우리디쎄는 사고로 죽게 되고 오르페는 그녀를 안고 집으로 돌아간다. 그녀를 안고 돌아오는 것을 본 그의 애인 미라는 정신이 나가 욕을 하며 돌을 던진다. 결국 머리에 돌을 맞고 오르페는 에우리디쎄를 안은 채 벼랑으로 떨어져 같이 죽게 된다.
