Le Temps des cerises is a sentimental comedy, full of charm, on the life of two beings whom everything opposes, but which chance brings together. He is a painter and out of inspiration. She is young, pretty, full of life, not very sure of herself. They have nothing in common except their humor, their charm, their need to create and their passion for painting. They will live a few days together and both will emerge transformed from this parenthesis.

프랑스 남부의 시골에서 작은 농장을 운영하는 에메는 무뚝뚝하고 농사일 밖에 모르는 단순한 중년 남자다. 황당한 감전사로 아내를 잃은 에메는 바쁜 농장일과 쌓여 있는 집안일로 목하 고민 중이다. 농장일과 집안일에 힘겨워하던 그는 결국 새로운 파트너를 찾기 위해 결혼상담소를 찾아가고, 상담소장은 빠른 구인을 위해서는 루마니아가 최고라며 새로운 파트너를 찾기 위해 루마니아로의 원정을 권한다. 이웃들에게는 독일에 간다고 거짓말을 하고 루마니아 행 비행기를 탄 에메. 루마니아에서 만나는 여성들은 국제결혼으로 어려운 경제상황에서 벗어나기 위해 무조건 "미남이시네요"를 연발하고, 에메는 오히려 “당신은 못생겼다”고 말하는 솔직하고 착한 엘레나에게 호감을 갖게 된다. 프랑스로 함께 돌아온 두 남녀! 에메는 엘레나 덕분에 평화롭고 행복한 나날을 보내지만 순수하고 열정적인 그녀에게 다가서기엔 자신이 한없이 초라하게 느껴진다. 때문에 진정 자기를 아내로 맞아주었으면 하는 엘레나의 바램과는 달리 에메는 일정하게 거리를 두고 그녀를 대한다. 결국 서로에게 조금씩 마음을 열게 되는 두 사람. 하지만 엘레나는 에메에게 말하지 못한 비밀 때문에 괴로워하고, 에메는 아내로 맞이하기엔 엘레나가 너무 젊고 아름답다고 생각한다. 타지 프랑스 생활에서 절박한 외로움을 느끼는 엘레나를 위해 무언가를 해주어야 한다고 생각한 에메는 결국 그녀를 위해 중요한 결정을 내리게 된다. 과연 그 둘의 서로에 대한 착한 마음은 이루어질 수 있을까?
