Santos Palace is a coffee shop in Belgium. There, a waitress serves a strange client. Their eyes meet, minutes pass and we seem to witness a love story that hasn’t began or may have already started, with its potential jealousies and passions, or which may never happen at all; another type of romance. The feeling of seeing or being seen, the rhythmical editing, the use of cinemascope to make objects and spaces appear as abstract forms, the predominance of detailed shots: these are all obsessions, forms and audiovisual ideas that explode in this surprising film.

제 1차 세계대전이 끝날 무렵. 프랑스인 마띨드는 전쟁에 참가한 자신의 약혼자 마네끄가 군법재판소에서 사형 언도를 받고 동료 죄수 네 명과 함께 적군과 아군 사이의 비무장 지대에 버려졌다는 사실을 전해 듣는다. 살아남았을 가능성은 전혀 없다는 사실과 함께. 사랑하는 사람의 죽음을 인정할 수 없었던 마띨드. 마네끄의 생사여부를 밝히기 위한 그녀의 길고도 힘든 여정은 그때부터 시작된다. 마띨드는 마네끄의 마지막 며칠에 관한 사실을 밝혀나가면서 사람들로부터 조금씩 다른 증언을 듣게 되고, 그때마다 절망에 빠진다. 그러나 그녀는 희망의 끈을 놓지 않는다. 그래야만 살아날 힘이 생기기에… 선천적으로 낙천적인 성격의 마띨드는 약혼자가 분명히 살아있다는 믿음을 가지고 주변 사람들을 설득해 마네끄의 행적을 찾아 나선다. 그러나 시간이 흐르면서 다섯 명의 사형수가 겪은 엄청난 시련이 점점 모습을 드러내고, 마띨드는 전쟁이 수많은 사람들에게 남긴 여러 모습의 비극을 지켜보게 된다.

애스홀클럽 '렉텀' 앞. 화면을 어지럽히며 싸이렌이 울린다. 한 남자는 들것에 실려나오고, 한 남자는 손목에 수갑이 채인 채 경찰을 따라나선다. 그들은 '알렉스'의 연인 '마르쿠스'와 옛 연인 '피에르'. 이어 장면이 바뀌면 알렉스의 강간범 '테니아'를 찾아 파리 밤거리를 미친 듯 돌아다니는 두 사람이 보인다. 그리고 강간당한 알렉스의 아픔보다 몇 배 더 잔인한 복수가 시작된다. 영화는 다시 시간을 거슬러 올라가 지하보도에서 강간당하는 알렉스를 비춘다. 파티장에서 자신을 돌보지 않는 마르쿠스와 다툰 후 혼자서 지하보도를 건너다 일을 당한 것. 그 후 카메라는 마르쿠스와 알렉스의 침실로 들어가 가장 행복했던 한 때를 비추며 그들을 가능한 한 현재의 불행에서 가장 멀리 있는 곳으로 데려간다.

French novelist Vincent Ravalec made his directorial debut with this French drama about small-time crook Gaston (Yvan Attal) who poses as a millionaire after he picks up hitchhiking 16-year-old Marie-Pierre (Virginie Lanoue). Actually living in a seedy apartment, Gaston deals in stolen goods, but he soon climbs to bigger heists, including car thefts. Concealing his illegal activities, Gaston operates his company, Extramill, out of upscale, posh offices, while he and Marie-Pierre move into a sedate upper-middle-class neighborhood. Life is sweet, but the onset of paranoia, kinky sex activities, and police probes eventually culminate in violence.

In a French prison, three men are coming to terms with the emotional and physical torment which their incarceration brings them. Arnaud is serving a six-month sentence for drug smuggling; he protests his innocence and will do anything to secure an early release. Francky is a hardened criminal who has all but lost his wife and family and who seeks comfort in self-inflicted abuse. Kader is in prison for theft; he is the most philosophical of the three men, he is growing accustomed to prison life and seems to prefer it to the world outside.

The Select Hotel is a dead end place for those who do not have enough cash to go somewhere else. The last shelter for those who hang around at night. These shadows walking silently along the streets, selling their poor body heat for a few crumpled banknotes, swallow and digested by their voracious thirst for a cheap high. Enough to forget for a while the distress of a ruined life and to dream of a more rejoicing elsewhere. Nathalie and her brother Tof struggle against this futureless world. Pierre, a shoe-repairer, troubled by Nathalie's grace will take part for a while to the life of these two children of misery.

Mona is the girlfriend of Pierre, who is a member of a rather pathetic rock band in France. Their hero is the singer "Johnny Valentine " who, seeing that Mona is being neglected, decides to make her his own.
