The film is an immersion to the symbolism of the story, it’s an adaptation that although it retains the main actions of the story, it’s especially interested in the high capacity of suggestion of the language. O obcecado Dr. Herbert West, cumpre pena de 14 anos devido massacre causado na Universidade de Miskatonic, por experimentos sobre reanimação de organismos mortos. Na prisão, longe de reabilitar-se e de se arrepender de sua persistência cientifica de vencer a morte, ele segue seu trabalho de uma forma precária. Seu laboratório está localizado em cima de sua cama e suas cobaias são ratos e baratas. A chegada de um jovem médico na prisão, o Dr. Howard muda drasticamente esta situação. Por trás de sua fachada inocente e alegre, Howard esconde seu verdadeiro motivo de estar nesta prisão: a vingança da morte de sua irmã assassinada brutalmente em Miskatonic pelo Dr. West.
