The World Tag League is a professional wrestling round-robin tag team tournament held by New Japan Pro Wrestling as a spin-off of the popular singles tournament, the G1 Climax. It was created in 1991 as the Super Grade Tag League, as a continuation of a regular tag team tournament held since 1980, gaining the name G1 Tag League in 1999. In 2012, New Japan's new owners, the Bushiroad company, renamed the tournament to its current form. The winners of the tournament, assuming they do not already hold the belts, obtain #1 contendership to the IWGP Tag Team Championship. The World Tag League is held under a points system, with 2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The current format, introduced in 2006, is essentially identical to that of the G1 Climax, with the top two scoring teams from two blocks of five or six advancing to the semifinals, and the winners of those matches battling in the final.

Controversial, out-spoken, brash…those are just three words that describe the man known worldwide as CM Punk, and during his tenure in Ring of Honor, he more than lived up to those labels. He also established himself as one of the finest professional wrestlers in the world today with historic bouts against the likes of Samoa Joe, Homicide, Bryan Danielson, & Christopher Daniels, and will forever be considered a legend in ROH. But for three months in the summer of 2005, Punk shocked Ring of Honor fans & officials alike and it all began one night in June when ROH gathered to bid farewell to one of their own as Punk challenged for the ROH World Title one final time. What happened that evening kicked off three months of chaos as Punk took the World Title hostage and left ROH scrambling to find the man that would dethrone him. They were three of the most exciting, unpredictable, chaotic months in ROH’s history, and they have since come to be known as “The Summer of Punk”…

A Legend and an icon; the man known worldwide as Samoa Joe was one of the men upon whose hard work, drive, and determination Ring of Honor was built. His World Title reign set records that still stand, over 7 years since it was brought to an end, but what happens when something that epic comes to an end? This is that tale, the store of how Samoa Joe cemented his position as a true legend whose legacy is still felt to this day by every ROH wrestler, especially the World champions that have followed.
Christopher Daniels
Legendary...for 645 days and through 29 successful title defenses, that is just one of many words that describes the ROH World Title reign of Samoa Joe. Unstoppable...that is what Joe proved to be as he barreled through one challenger after another. Homicide, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, Paul London, an d even CM Punk, not one of them were able to stop the onslaught of the man who elevated the ROH Title first into a World Title and then into the most prestigious championship in professional wrestling today. Samoa Joe was a true one man wrecking crew as he demolished his opponents with a mix of brutality and finesse that will likely never be touched by any other warrior.

From his highly anticipated debut to his traitorous betrayal of ROH, from his reigns as a vilified tag champion to the fans embracing him wholeheartedly, Claudio Castagnoli's career ran the gamut in Ring of Honor. Despite the swaying emotions of both the fans & Claudio himself, one thing that never changed was their respect for his skill, his power, his versatility, and their love for saying "Heeeeey"!

In 2002, ROH was founded with several precepts in mind: sportsmanship, respect, and, of course, honor. These ideas were expressed in the Code of Honor and that code was embodied by a handshake that preceded and followed each match. Enter Christopher Daniels, the man who declared from day one that he would not follow such a code, that he rejected those ideals, and as he built a Prophecy around him, worked to decimate what the code stood for. Whether he was facing Bryan Danielson & Low Ki in the first ever main event or Samoa Joe in a World Title Challenge, Daniels denied the handshake with every fiber of his being. Yet with a forced absence and battles against the likes of Claudio Castagnoli and CM Punk, things changed...

Jay & Mark Briscoe have defined tag team wrestling in Ring of Honor since day one. As part of ROH from the very first event in 2002, the brothers from Sandy Fork, DE have captured the ROH World Tag Titles multiple times with a fast-paced, hard-hitting, risk-taking style that has certainly cemented them as ROH legends. As a duo, they have faced every team that has ever set foot into the ROH ring and dominated them with their tag team excellence and with their willingness to brawl it out if the situation calls for it. With their title bouts against teams such as Austin Aries & Roderick Strong, their brutal Ladder War, or their state of the art contests against Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin, Jay & Mark Briscoe have demonstrated why they are the most respected team in ROH history. Fearless, confident and driven, the Briscoe Brothers are indeed The Baddest Tag Team on the Planet!

With unequaled aggression and a natural chemistry honed from a mutual desire to be the absolute best, The American Wolves took the tag team division by storm. Sending a message with ruthless assaults on The Briscoes and Steen & Generico, Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards quickly ascended to the top of the heap and claimed championship success. Be it in a Ladder War on in state of the art tag team exhibition against duos like The Young Bucks or The Kings of Wrestling, Davey & Eddie dominated the competition with a unique hybrid of submission wrestling, brutal striking, and with a drive for success rarely matched by any others.

Phenomenal. That is the one word that has defined AJ Styles wrestling career and, without a doubt, his tenure in Ring of Honor Wrestling. From the day AJ first came to ROH for his debut match against Low Ki, he wowed the fans with his own unique blend of high-flying wrestling and hard-hitting strikes. From 2002 until his temporary departure in 2004, AJ Styles engaged in one spectacular bout after another against opponents the likes of Christopher Daniels, Bryan Danielson, The Briscoes, not to mention his instant classic agaisnt Paul London at 'Night of the Grudges'. Just as AJ made history by being crowned the first ROH Pure Champion, he was forced to leave Ring of Honor but returned after a year away, better than ever before, to plunge into a heated rivalry with former protege Jimmy Rave.
