Maria da Luz waits for her husband who got lost somewhere in Angola during the war. With no news, she finds herself surrounded by families that, like her, desperately long for some kind of hope regarding their loved ones fighting abroad. She takes the matter in her hands and starts tape recording loving messages from each mother, wife and other family members. Carrying the tapes, she travels to Angola and personally delivers these messages to each and every soldier in a personal quest right in the middle of a country in war.

Apesar dos seus 18 anos, Jó (João Jesus) é já um rapaz desencantado com a vida. Rosa (Maria do Céu Guerra), com 73 anos, é uma mulher frágil e bondosa que se debate com a incapacidade de lidar com o recente falecimento de Joaquim (Nicolau Breyner), com quem partilhou quase toda a existência. Quando, depois de uma discussão particularmente violenta, Jó é expulso de casa pelo pai, refugia-se no terraço de Rosa, onde decide passar a noite. Na manhã seguinte, a velha senhora descobre o rapaz e decide acolhê-lo em sua casa. Entre os dois nasce uma enorme cumplicidade que, apesar de incompreendida por todos, se torna a cada dia mais forte e verdadeira…
