A história de um grupo de homens que são transformados em verdadeiras máquinas da morte em uma ilha chamada Silmido. Em janeiro de 1968, um homem se infiltra em Seul para assassinar o presidente. A operação não dá certo, fazendo com que as autoridades sul-coreanas recrutem indivíduos que vivem à margem da sociedade para uma distante ilha, onde passam por um cruel treinamento com o objetivo de se tornarem poderosos soldados e assassinos. O objetivo da missão é forçar uma união entre as duas Coréias. Porém, com o início dos anos 70, essa aproximação se dá de forma natural, embora sem nenhum contrato oficial.

Yi-su, a 37 year-old professor, can't forget her first love Joon-ho who's missing in action in Vietnam. She meets Hyun-woo one day, who look surprising like Joon-ho. Ae-shim, a waitress, meets Yun-gu and ends up living with him at a rest area restaurant by the industrial highway. However, Yun-gu treats Ae-shim badly. One day, the vagabond Jun-tae shows up in front of Ae-shim. He seduces her and they plan to kill Yun-gu and get his fortune. But Yun-gu catches on to Ae-shim's betrayal and plotting. Finally, Hyun-wu recovers completely and the two confirm their love. And the next day, Hyun-wu returns to society as a healthy man.

1930 Manchuria: Seong-Jin, a member of Korean independence army, is arrested and tortured by Suzuki. Seong-Jin’s tells his colleague Min-Wuk the location of funds. Min-Wuk puts the money into the stomach of a dead hog and floats it down the river. Soon, Min-Wuk is captured by Mokosan, a gangster from Peking and Ye-Ji, a barmaid. While Suzuki arrests all of them and kills Mokosan, Min-Wuk, succeeds in arresting Suzuki and escaping, as he continues his journey along the river to deliver the funds.
