Jeff Lebowski, um entusiasta jogador de bowling, vê a sua casa arrombada por dois gangsters que julgam estar perante o multimilionário Jeffrey Lebowski, no intuito de reaver a dívida que a sua mulher tem para o pornógrafo Jackie Treehom. Mas enganaram-se, e bateram na porta errada, este não passa de um desempregado que se auto-intitula "The Dude". Mas o seu azar é tanto que quando decide visitar o tão procurado Lebowski em vez de receber a tão esperada recompensa vê-se envolvido no rapto da mulher deste.
