Francisco Martínez Soria nació el 15 de diciembre de 1902 en
Tarazona, Zaragoza, falleció en Madrid el 26 de febrero de 1982.
Hijo de policía, en 1908 su familia se trasladó a Barcelona,
donde comenzó sus estudios y, tras ellos, su trabajo como
dependiente y, más tarde, como comercial. Durante esta época
compatibiliza su trabajo con actuaciones en grupos de aficionados del
barrio de Gracia.
Contrajo matrimonio el 24 de octubre de 1929, con Consuelo Ramos
Sánchez con la que tuvo cuatro hijos: Natividad, Francisco, Consuelo
y Eugenia Martínez-Soria Ramos.
En 1934 colabora como extra en la comedia en blanco y negro
Sereno... y tormenta del director Ignacio F. Iquino, con quien
colaboraría, como actor, en otras once películas.
Durante la Guerra Civil Española deja su trabajo y se centra en
el teatro como actor profesional. En 1938 debuta en el Teatro
Fontalba con la compañía de Rafael López Somoza con la obra El
infierno, de Antonio Paso.
Su primer papel de cine como actor principal será en 1938, en un
mediometraje cómico producido por el sindicato anarquista CNT
titulado Paquete, el fotógrafo público número uno. Continúa
participando como actor secundario en muchas películas hasta 1944,
en que retorna por completo al teatro como actor y empresario.
Había fundado su propia compañía en 1940 instalándose en el
Teatro Fontalba de Madrid, junto a María Francés y Ricardo Fuentes.
Inicia entonces un repertorio de obras cómicas que empieza con Tu
mujer no es cosa mía, de Iquino y Prades. Entre los años 1942 y
1944, es nombrado director y primer actor de la compañía de comedia
titular del Teatro de la Zarzuela. En 1960 adquiere el Teatro Talía
de Barcelona. Durante las cuatro décadas de la dictadura franquista,
fue uno de los actores teatrales más aclamados por el público, tal
vez por amoldarse a los nuevos cánones marcados por el régimen
gubernativo e interpretando decenas de comedias, entre las que pueden
mencionarse La tía de Carlos (1946-1967), de Brandon Thomas, El
abuelo Curro, Anacleto se divorcia, Bonaparte quiere vivir tranquilo
(1964), La educación de los padres, Te casas a los 60... ¿y qué?
(1974) y ¡Guárdame el secreto, Lucas! (1977), las dos últimas de
Dionisio Ramos.
Volvió al cine en los años cincuenta, aunque fue en 1965 cuando,
dirigido por Pedro Lazaga, consiguió el éxito con la película La
ciudad no es para mí, adaptación cinematográfica de un previo
éxito teatral del actor que alcanzó las 3000 representaciones.
Desde este momento su personaje de cateto entrañable no dejaría de
aparecer en pantalla hasta su muerte, ocurrida en Madrid el 26 de
febrero de 1982 a causa de un infarto agudo de miocardio. Dos días
después de su fallecimiento, fue enterrado en el cementerio de
Cabrera de Mar (Barcelona), localidad donde él residía.
