Eugène-François Vidocq

Sob o reinado de Napoleão, François Vidocq, o único homem que escapou da maior colônia penal do país, é uma lenda do fundo parisiense. Deixado para morrer depois de sua última fuga espetacular, o ex-prisioneiro da colônia penal tenta fazê-lo esquecer sob as características de um único operador.

Paris, 1830. Às vésperas de uma segunda revolução, a capital está em rebuliço e o barulho da revolta só cresce. Carlos X acaba de abdicar. Vidocq (Gérard Depardieu), o chefe da segurança nacional, persegue uma estranha criatura conhecida como O Alquimista ­ a qual, supõe-se, é responsável por uma série de crimes e raptos. Quando finalmente encontra o inimigo Vidocq é vencido e, horrorizado ao descobrir o verdadeiro rosto do Alquimista, joga-se num poço em chamas. Etienne (Guillaume Canet), um jornalista que pretendia escrever um livro sobre Vidocq, passa então a seguir os últimos passos de seu personagem e acaba tendo surpreendentes revelações em sua viagem ao submundo de Paris.

A film based upon the life of Vidocq, the famous adventurer, who, after numerous prison escapes ceased being a crook, a thief and a counterfeiter, and was employed by Pasquier’s government’istry as director of the crime-fighting Sûreté Nationale.

François Vidocq has deserted to go back to his wife and kids, so he becomes a thief. Unfortunately, he finds she had become Manon-la-blonde, mistress of a rich man named Ouvrard, and his children have disappeared. He offers his services to the chief of intelligence service and begins a fight against the Aristo, chief of the gang of the children of the sun. After a few years, he dismantles the gang, and finds both his sons. One has become a blackguard, the other a famous organist who is about to be knighted and will soon get married to his beloved.
