Брат поэта и драматурга Тадеуша Ружевича. Снял более 20 художественных фильмов, большинство из которых отмечено на национальных и международных кинофестивалях. В 1955-1971 преподавал в киношколе в Лодзи. В 1954 году снял свой первый художественный фильм - «Трудная любовь» - типичную для соцреализма производственную ленту. Затем обратился к эпохе Второй мировой войны. Её событиям посвящены фильмы «Вольный город» (1958, приз МКФ в Вене), «Вестерплятте» (1967, приз МКФ в Москве) и «Свидетельство о рождении» (1961, приз МКФ в Канне, Венеции). Влиянию войны на жизнь и сознание людей посвящены также фильмы «Три женщины» (1956), «Опали листья с деревьев» (1975, приз Национального кинофестиваля в Гданьске), «Рысь» (1981). Особое место в творчестве Ружевича занимает фильм «Страсть» (1978, гран-при Национального кинофестиваля в Гдыне), в котором режиссер обратился к болезненному и малоизвестному эпизоду польской истории: революции 1846 года. Постепенно излюбленным жанром режиссёра стала камерная психологическая драма, показывающая человеческое одиночество, неприспособленность к общепринятым правилам, стереотипам, непонимание даже в кругу самых близких людей («Место на земле», 1959, приз МКФ в Сан-Себастьяне); «Голос с того света», 1962; «Одиночество вдвоём», 1968; «Дверь в стене», 1973, приз МКФ в Сан-Себастьяне). Самый известный из последних фильмов режиссёра - «Женщина в шляпе» (1984, призы Национального кинофестиваля в Гданьске и МКФ в Москве). Последний художественный фильм Ружевича - «Ночной гость» (1989), после которого режиссёр переключился на документальное кино, сняв несколько картин о своей молодости и братьях (Тадеуше и Януше, погибшем на войне).

Ms Latter is struggling with the financial problems of her institution, because the parents of the students are still in arrears with payments. The main hero obsessively wants to become an actor. The would-be actor fails two entrance exams to the state acting school and has a nervous breakdown. Eventually he commits himself to the mental institution where patients are rehabilitated by doing some artwork. He refuses to paint but does some acting. Westerplatte is a small peninsula at the entry to the Gdansk Harbour. Before World War II, it functioned as a Polish ammunition depot in the Free City of Danzig/Gdansk. Its crew consisted of one infantry company and a group of civilians, 182 people in total. It was the only Polish guard-post at the mouth of the Vistula River, with as little as five sentries, one field cannon, two anti-armour guns and four mortars. It was the first obstacle to Hitler's predatory march across Europe. The first shots of World War II were fired here. This film tells the story of Westerplatte's courageous defenders.
