After five years of hard work in America Juraj Hordubal (Anatoliy Kuznetsov) returns back home. He is looking forward to his wife Polana (Libuse Geprtová) and his little daughter Hafie. The family and the village welcome him with hesitation. Everybody believed that Juraj died in America because Polana stopped receiving money from him already two years ago. Polana's farm was prospering first of all thanks to the young stable boy Stepán (Sándor Oszter). Men in the pub first indicate and then say to Juraj directly that Polana has been unfaithful to him with Stepán.

It is summer 1944. The war is far away from Slovak mountains for the time being. The head of forest management Borodác brings a new employee to complete the eight woodcutters work team of Czechs, Slovaks and one Pole - the young guy is Martin Uher, a former clerk form Prague. The eight tough men do not trust the newcomer at first, but as time is passing, they got used to him. After some time, Martin gets next to Julika, a young wife of the gamekeeper Tkác (Vlado Müller) and they begin to go out secretly. The gamekeeper knows that Martin had promised to cooperate with German Gestapo, after he had experienced a hard interrogation. In avoiding to be a grass, Martin leaves Prague to hide in Slovak mountains. Tkác wants Martin to inform on his colleagues who hide guns in the forest to ready to use them against Nazis.

One of them, law student Pavel, is more attracted to film than to law. With his eight-millimeter camera, he films everything that catches his attention. One day he captures an interesting face on film, a girl with an air of mystery. Pavel visits the girl, whose name is Helena, and meets hers and her elder energetic sister Olga. From Olga, he learns that the girls have spent the years of German occupation in a concentration camp and cannot forget the horrors they have lived through.

Young inventor Petr comes to her rescue when she tries to flee from two men wanting to take her away. Věra confesses that she has fled from home because her father, a factory owner, wanted to profitably marry her off. Petr is fascinated by the emancipated woman and shows her round his laboratory, where he plans to create a robot of his own - but one that would be far more advanced. Věra cuts herself on a broken test-tube and a drop of her blood gets in the solution. In the morning, they are taken aback to see Věra's double. This lucky chance has helped Petr create an artificial being, Miss Golem. She has a single motive for her actions: to take care of Věra and allow her to do only what is good for her.

At the funeral of his schoolmate, the nearly-fifty-year old architect Jirí Mánek (Václav Voska) meets his former close acquaintance - physician Jarmila (Blanka Bohdanová). They both are still single. Jarmila has recently returned to Prague after years of work on the frontier. Jirí leaves for a business trip. As a conservationist, he is to grant permission for an adaptation of a Baroque château to office spaces. On the road, a pretty young hitchhiker named Eva (Ida Rapaicová) stops him. Eva is Slovak and her spontaneous behavior enchants Jirí. He thus does not mind making a short detour and takes Eva all the way to the luxurious cottage of her parents. A romance develops between the two people, so different in age and temperament.

Еще в молодости актер Франтишек Лукавец и его преподаватель Владимир Тума стали врагами. Франтишек настоял на том, чтобы Туму как реакционера и враждебно относящегося к новой власти уволили из училища. Прошло много лет, и вот они вновь встретились на сцене одного театра. Франтишеку поручена роль Юлиуса Фучика, Тума в этом же спектакле играет роль гестаповца. По ходу действия гестаповец бьет Фучика. Воспользовавшись случаем, Тума на генеральной репетиции по настоящему избивает своего давнего врага. По лицу Франтишека течет кровь, но он все равно будет играть. Репетиция продолжается...

Ружена отказывается делать всю работу по дому сама. У нее и Войты есть и другие занятия помимо основной работы. Ружена рисует иллюстрации для атласа, Войта пишет книгу о внешкольном обучении детей. Ни у кого из них нет времени на домашнее хозяйство. У младшего судьи Мацека эта парочка не выходит из головы, поэтому мужчина решает преподать Коскубам хороший урок супружеской жизни…

Ноябрь 1944 года. Советская Армия гонит немецко-фашистские орды, отступающие по всему фронту. Вместе с советскими бойцами на территорию своей родины вступает чехословацкая танковая бригада во главе с командиром Сташеком. Между тем, окопавшееся в Лондоне эмигрантское чешское правительство, опасаясь того, что танковая бригада может стать основой подлинно народной армии, отдаёт приказ о роспуске бригады. Осуществляя этот приказ, начальник штаба бригады капитан Ренч ведёт внутри бригады подрывную деятельность. Коммунисту-политруку Томешу вместе с другими патриотами удаётся сорвать антинародные замыслы врага. Политрук убеждает командира Сташека обратиться за помощью к Советскому Главному Командованию. И вот советские танки торжественно передаются чехословацкой бригаде. На плечах отступающего врага чешские патриоты врываются в Остраву.
