Two brothers reunite during the Christmas season at the height of the pandemic.

One day at the end of the 1800s, 14-year-old Lise’s life is changed forever. She is the eldest of her siblings, the first in her family to go to school and full of hope and confidence in life. But when her mother goes into labour, it quickly appears that something is wrong. As night falls and the labour progresses, Lise begins to understand that a day that began in childhood might end with her becoming the woman of the house.

Following the end of the liberation struggle against British Colonial Rule in Cyprus, an EOKA rebel fighter travels to London to exact revenge on the collaborator who betrayed him and applied water torture. The film contains the first ever scenes of water-boarding showing the rebel being tortured supervised by a British intelligence officer. A dramatic search through the streets of London follows, culminating in a tense life or death confrontation. The film became a cause-célèbre in England, was critically acclaimed and discussed in the Houses of Parliament.

Suk-hee's mother is remarried to a man who has a son a year senior than Suk-hee. The two don't get along well first, but soon they grow intimate. Suk-hee learns, though, that she needs to give up her love for her mother's happiness. One day she leaves her mother and her new family, and goes on her way to her hometown, where she sees a Zelkova tree.

This is the sole surviving motion picture of Unique Film (Shanghai), one of China's three major film companies in the 1930s. The young lovers in rural China are framed by their evil landlord. The man is sent to prison; the woman is forced to get married. She tries to seek revenge but is killed. When the man is released from prison, he joins the People's Volunteer Army but is killed in battle. The film was significant in its time. Runje Shaw had imported advanced American audio film equipment and technology in 1931, making this one of the first sound films in China. As one of Unique's few ‘progress' films, it also reflects that this ‘entertainment-only', apolitical film company, under the left-wing influences in society, also needed to make films with topics such as the war effort and that criticise the bourgeoisie. Struggle is a joint effort among the best of talents in front of and behind the camera, and is also the only surviving work of director Qiu Qixiang.
