Synopsis
The “terrifying true story” of the first televised exorcism on NBC in 1971. Millions around the country watched the program that was recorded in Chicago. The NBC news segment was a success, the exorcism was not. Instead, it made things worse for the Becker family who lived there. Much worse.
The main focus of the story is a young girl, Maša Artuković, allegedly possessed by Satan, whose deteriorating state results in the arrival of Viktor Supilo, a priest who is to conduct the rite of exorcism upon her. The ritual is to be performed in the presence of Maša's sister Vera, a known psychiatrist Sofija and an unannounced crew of TV reporters that want to expose exorcism as a controversial and dangerous ritual that has no place in the modern Catholic Church.
An exorcism should end the suffering of a young girl. Sometimes God's words are not enough to end true evil.

Having lived through traumatizing events during WWII, Father Lankester Merrin takes a sabbatical from the Church to conduct archaeological excavations in British-administered East Africa. The natives are convinced that uncovering the church has unleashed a demon, and begin to violently clash with the British military troops. Set in a little remote village, where everyone is very religious and primitive, it tells the story of Joana, the most beautiful girl in village. She is badly regarded by all other women because they envy her and her affairs with men. As soon as accidents start happening involving her (at some point, she holds an already sick baby and he eventually dies), the women (and slowly, men too) in the village start claiming that she is possessed by the devil. At first,she doesn't believe it. They ask for two priests to exorcise her, but they leave and say to the people that she isn't possessed at all, and that people need to relax. But, little by little, they start convincing Joana that she is really possessed and she starts entering a stage of slight madness and behaving like she is. So, people "believing" that she isn't going to die, and that the demon will leave her body, with her permission, they end up burning her alive...

There, the crew uncovers a church that predates Christian missions into the area, but the discovery also causes strange events to start occurring -- including physical changes to a young, disabled boy, whom Merrin grows to suspect has been possessed by a demon.
