After being released from prison a career criminal wants to start a new life. To finance this new life he decides to rob a small-town bank during a funfair. Meanwhile, he's trying to get rid of a women who can tie him to a previous crime.

Instead, he goes to a technical college in Mainz where he talks his teachers into including airplane design in the curriculum. Fokker soon starts building a prototype of his 'Spider' plane.

Farmer Jan Alting, who has disowned his son for collaborating with the nazis, provides shelter for a Jewish couple, a wanted communist and a rebel aristocrat. Diary fragments tell of the arrival of Belgian refugees across the Dutch border in winter 1915. Reserve lieutenant Berkhage returns from the Belgian border with a refugee child. Named "Big" by the company the kid soon becomes the regimental darling.

The first 'official' Dutch sound film was presented as a historic document on the history of the Netherlands, highlighting the importance of prince William of Orange's role during the Eighty Years war. His story is told in a series of short episodes, spanning his sudden rise to prince of Orange in 1844 to his murder by Balthasar Gerards in 1584.
