The film, in Malayalam and made by the Indian film maker K P Kumaran, AkashaGopuram is set among the Indian immigrant community in London and tells the story of Albert Samson (Mohanlal), a middle-aged architect who has clawed his way to prominence.

The film is about Vettikadu Sivan (Jayasurya), a young, intelligent man who sets out on a mission to settle a score and give a peace of mind to his uncle Vettikadu Sadasivan (Jagathy Sreekumar) who is the chief minister of the state. To do this, Sivan hatches a plan to get the twin brother of Sadasivan who is settled in Gujarat and is an ordinary banana seller and a bit on the lesser side of intelligence.

The film talks the issue of Indian citizens who left the country before independence in search of job, mostly to Arabia, and happened to reach Pakistan, and then when returned to the homeland, happened to be holding a Pakistani passport, and now is forced by the Indian authorities to leave the nation to Pakistan, which even the Pakistani authorities won't allow.

Nasrani takes us to the Kottayam belt, where rich rubber planters and estate owners live. One such rich planter is David John Kottarathil, popularly known as DK. Sankarankutty, a village simpleton, lives a carefree life, indulges in childish pursuits, lives off the money given to him by his sister (working elsewhere as a servant), and eats quite voraciously. Then one day he gets married, but the wife is frustrated by his aimless lifestyle & irresponsible attitude (even after she gets pregnant). So she goes back to her parents. Meanwhile, his sister who is now living with her lover, can no longer provide for him, and a kind widow who used to care for him passes away. He has nowhere & nobody to fall back on, and from this point on, as he starts a job as assistant to a lorry driver, he starts looking at life in a whole new way and begins to mature as well.

Across a dirt road, the circus truck comes to a village. The tent goes up. Schoolboys run to the tent. Village women come and watch an acrobat roll a hoop across a tightrope. A lion leaps from the edge of one stool - across darkness - on to another stool. A gap-toothed old woman gazes at a goat on a tight rope; her eyes are wide with curiosity. For three days the circus makes small ripples in the life of this village. Municipal permits are required. At a toddy shop, a soldier befriends the circus strongman; a pump attendant sits on a rock each day watching a village girl bathe and dry her hair. The dwarf brings back to the circus a watermelon larger than his head. In the film's three days, we, the viewers, learn the geography of the village: the banyan treewith leaves like transparent film, the shining water, the light on the sand at sunset. When the circus leaves the village, it leaves us. The narrative says: The circus comes and leaves; life goes on.

Vishwam and Sita, who resist the opposition from their families, elope and marry. The unemployed couple begin a happier married life, but soon land in a sea of perils without a source of income.
