A Film Far Beyond a God
Director
Mecca was already a major pilgrim destination before the birth of Islam, as 360 statues, representing various idols, were gathered in the sanctuary of the Kaaba. The most important one was Hubal, one of the main pre-islamic gods. A Film Far Beyond a God traces the origins of the conflicts that continue to afflict us today. It draws up three main motifs: the angst, the travel, and the desert. With this experimental documentary, Waël Noureddine films a knowingly hidden past in order to help us decipher the present.

"When this last war broke out, I was faraway in Paris. I had but one idea: to return to Beirut as quickly as possible and to begin shooting a film, for historical moments were taking place. This film became indispensible: to film so that history would cease repeating itself and to build up a picture library for future generations. I never understood why so few films were made during the Lebanese Civil War. Apart from the odd film, nothing remains from that time. The war surely merited more attention." (Waël Noureddine)

Beirut – or indeed maybe any city, anywhere – is at war with itself. Here, no conflict is ever resolved, and no wall is ever repaired. The explosions resonate better in this city full of holes. Young men who live here are caught between military service and religious affiliation. I visit some friends, gather their suicidal testaments. No one goes anywhere. I cross my city in every way possible, day and night. 16mm
