This is a story of a dysfunctional British Indian family set against a backdrop of changing multicultural Britain. As Brexit takes grip and fear against immigrates rises, an imported Indian bride, Simmy, discovers her British Asian husband, Raj, has run away on their wedding night. Her community conscious mother-in-law, Gurbaksh, traps the new bride in the house, to uphold their Izzat (honour). All is unwell, until the younger wayward son, Harry, arrives home from prison on licence. A secret love story starts to unfold, and the two inmates escape to the Slough countryside. As family secrets come to a head, the family have to let go of the past and cultural expectations.
Tina Marie D'Silva lives a middle-class lifestyle in a small town in India along. One day renowned singer, Vikramaditya Singh, hears her voice and enrolls her in his prestigious school. After a few clashes, Tina manages to amaze everyone with her talents - so much so that she is invited to sing along with Vikramaditya himself. On the day of the recording, Tina fails to appear. An angered Vikramaditya decides to have nothing to do with her. He subsequently changes his mind, goes to visit her, and finds out that she is now a nun. After many attempts he succeeds in convincing her to return to sing with him at his very first live concert to which she agrees. He befriends a young student, Sakib, who dreams of being a writer. Their existence is punctuated by secret movies, a visiting prostitute, fear of detection and deportation, and the gangster-like smuggler who comes by for his take every week. The household is shaken up by the arrival of a white girl, Shah's girlfriend, and the sense of femininity and family she brings.
