Emeryka loses control of her life through the intrigue of a mysterious character named The Something and is led to an adventurous escape to a female sect, for which she has to leave her daughter behind. It is a story about the right to choose how each person defines themselves in terms of gender and sexuality.

Encountering the modern world for the first time, they develop an unlikely friendship with a brash American woman assigned to help them, but the young man struggles to adjust to this new life and his feelings of guilt about the brother he left behind.
