High school senior Sonya is ready to graduate and start college away from her traditional Romani parents, George and Morgan. Fearing Sonya is straying too far from the Romani way of life, George and Morgan are eager to find a husband for her. When George and Morgan’s community leader, Ian suggests Sonya marry his son, Alex, George and Morgan decide to share the news of Sonya’s arranged marriage at her 18th birthday party.

On her first night in the city, Jen meets Todd; she spends the night with him, only to discover he has already departed the morning after. Two years on, Todd reappears and disrupts the life Jen has created with her new boyfriend, Ethan. Tensions build and feelings resurface with a newfound fervor as Jen and Todd are inescapably drawn to each other, almost as if against their better judgment, struggling to find themselves and each other in the eternally changing city.

Friday night in Toronto’s lower west end. Chatter from a dinner party in Harry and Carol’s nouveau riche condo drifts through an open balcony door, as two freebase cokeheads, Pretty and Johnny, have a party on their own in the alley below. As the dinner guests leave, the hostess is nowhere to be found. Until, a wet thud and a sharp scream rise up to the balcony. Pretty stares in horror at Carol’s body, splayed on the alley floor, as Harry screams for help from above. The sharp burst of police sirens sends the cokeheads running as Peter, a middle aged police officer, sprints from his cruiser to check Carol’s vitals. Rocket forward three months and these five disparate lives begin to cataclysmically intersect through weaving multi-narrative story arcs that release spurts and geysers of long-suppressed sexuality and aggression. Beautiful things can happen when you hit rock bottom.
