History

Born in Madrid, Gabriel Bermudez studied first under his mother, Carmen Rodriguez Aragon, and then for one year under Teresa Berganza. Since the beggining of the 2002/2003 season, Gabriel has been with ensemble of the Zurich Opera House, where amoung many other roles, he has played Figaro, Marcello (La Bohème), Harlekin (Ariadne auf Naxos), Nardo (La finta giardiniera), Ping (Turandot), Borilée (Les Boréades), Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus), Plistene (La grotta di Trofonio), Silvio (Pagliacci) and Belcore (L’elisir d’amore). More recently, he has sung as Papageno am Teatro Real Madrid and Figaro at the Staatsoper Hannover, Papageno in Jerez, Oreste (Iphigénie en Tauride) in Oviedo, Ping, Le Mari (Les mammelles de Tirésias) and Silvio at the Liceu Barcelona, Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) in St. Moritz Opera Festiva, Marcello in Valladolid, Harlekin at the Opéra de Paris, Schaunard in Barcelona, Danilo in Dortmund and Mercutio at the Wiener Staatsoper. In 2012, he sang at the Salzburger Festspiele the harlequin in Ariadne auf Naxos and will return in 2014 for further projects. The young composer Max is due to marry Agathe, but before his wedding he must finish his opera on which he has been working for quite some time. Despite all his efforts, Max is plagued by worries that he will fail to complete the piece and so makes almost no progress. Visions and hallucinations haunt him, the boundaries between dream and reality seem to blur and overlap. Caspar tries to persuade him finally to give in to the hidden and dark creative powers within him and so overcome his inability to write; Caspar’s efforts are finally rewarded.

Bizet Carmen
Live recording from Oper Zurich, 2008, DVD release 2014. Jonas Kaufmann, 'the Prince of Tenors', appears with international star Vesselina Kasarova in Zürich Opera's starkly palpable staging of Bizet's ever-popular Carmen. The production sees Don José (Kaufmann) abandon his teenage attitudes in pursuit of Kasarova's free and independent Carmen - realising too late that his self-control has vanished, along with his youth.

Leoncavallo: Pagliacci

Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera recorded in 2009. Conductor Stefano Ranzani leads the orchestra and chorus of the Zurich Opera House, with performances by Argentinian tenor Jose Cura, Carlo Guelfi and Fiorenza Cedolins.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt is the conductor in this 2004 production of Beethoven's only opera staged at the Zurich Opera House. Finnish soprano Camilla Nyland takes the title role, with performances by Jonas Kaufmann, Laszlo Polgar and Alfred Muff.

The Zurich Opera gathered a superb cast for this production: Italian soprano Eva Mei sings the Countess Violante, known as Sandrina, the feigned gardener of the title. Spanish soprano Isabel Rey is her opponent Arminda, and Arminda's former lover, the melancholy Cavaliere Ramiro, is sung by Romanian mezzo Liliana Nikiteanu. Moretti's staging presents the action in a modern villa in a hierarchical world of the rich and famous.

Baron Zeta is desperate that the fabulously wealthy widow Hanna Glavari marry a Pontevedrian man so that her fortune remains in the country. He attempts to match her and his handsome attaché, Danilo. It turns out that Danilo and Hanna had had a love affair in years past. Nevertheless, Danilo now refuses to love her because he doesn't want to appear like he is only interested in her money...
