Over 2000 hand drawn images constitute the story board. Mohanlal was initially cast as "Swami Vivekananda", a cameo role in the movie which comes in the flashback, but later on withdrew from the movie due to problems with his shooting dates. The cast includes some of the best in the Malayalam movie industry.

Kunjunni (Mammootty), in an inebriated condition arrives on a rainy night to purchase Nellur Mana, which is believed to be haunted by the ghost of Savithri (Dhanya Mary Varghese). Being crazy about old houses and palaces, Kunjunni, who is in to realty business was lured into this deal by Gireeshan (Manoj K. Jayan), the son of Guptan Namboothiri (Thilakan), a feudal land lord. In a fight with Kunjunni, his younger son had fell from the terrace and had got paralyzed below the hips. Now Guptan Namboothiri wants to avenge for it. Upon reaching the old house, Kunjunni is attacked by the goons of Gireeshan, but he escapes miraculously. An atheist, Kunjunni leads a carefree life away from the traditions of his family and is inlove with Thulasimani (Kaniha), the daughter of Pisharody, the old friend of his late father, who was also a famous tantrik.

In a village named Ilavattam there lives a man by the name of Gopalakrishna Pillai. He is a man with diverse qualities. Basically he is a moneylender, but not the avaricious kind. He lends money at very low interest-rates but makes it a point to get his money back on the date agreed upon. The story takes a turn when a bank, named Grand Bank opens up in the village, offering to give out loans at very low interest. The manager of the bank is a young lady named Jayalakshmi. She has made her entry into the village with a very definite purpose. All this, plus the very different kind of bonding between Gopalakrishna Pillai and his mother, form the plot, which develops towards a very interesting climax.

Just after his resignation, Krishnan Nambiar is found brutally murdered at a private tennis court. The chief Minister (Kollam Thulasi) assigns Appan Menon (Suresh Gopi), the investigation charge.
