In a small town, Jordan, the son of police chief Bates, and his friends Glenn and Russel Derrek, the son of the garage-owner Gordon Russell, enjoy having their way with local girls, like Tori, and recording those exploits on video. When Alex Mills is about to report them to the police, he is pushed but it's staged as an accident. Samantha 'Sam' Cooper witnesses this, and is threatened in order to keep her silent, next her mothers car is sabotaged, finally ecstasy laid in her locker so an anonymous tip to the police gets her arrested. When Derrek turns his back to his friends and promises Sam's mother Laura to testify, he has a 'car accident', actually run off the road, but survives. Laura and Tori's mother Shawna get one cop, Officer Brady Thomas, to investigate, and the chief starts to suspect his son is going bad again, but where lies his loyalty?

Despite scientist Nathan's warnings, his boss continues an experiment meant as publicity for his satellite firm: exploding an asteroid. Instead it splits, and the major piece, the size of Iceland, changes course to earth. It is deflected but so close that it shift our course closer to the sun, causing rapid extreme heating, hopefully only mid-term. Nathan warns his sister, TV journalist Carly, and she her lover, police detective Tom. He brings his unruly daughter Kim, her ex-con lover C.J. and her mother, nurse Bonnie, when Nathan offers a flight to a friend's Arctic weather station. Tom takes charge of a dangerous trip to the airport, as everywhere on earth things catch fire and people fight for water, transport and sheer looting.

Millwood City engineer Scott Daniels, moved from Houston, investigates a series of mysterious fires. Scott's and Lourie Harper's only son Jesse, who hated the move or dad's youth home, fakes a fever and invites his new girlfriend Carmen. She's reporter Allison Saunders, Scott's high-school ex's, daughter and finds Jesse unconscious, overtaken by fumes. The sewers are full of dead rats. Cracks appear in various buildings. Gass leaks start explosive fires. Mayor Walker, who only care for politics and publicity, overrules Scott's call for a mass evacuation. Scott and city administration friend Kenny Barrows later discover the link is steam pressure drilling by Talbot's oil exploration firm, but fire chief Patterson is in league with Talbot for years, covers their tracks and undermines Scott's credibility. After Brad and Meg move to a detached house in need of major repairs after a fire and decades of neglect, they're happy that cheerful teenage son Tyler behaves normally, for puberty. Young daughter Gina's stories about sometimes evil 'fairies' are equally dismissed, but get worse. Self-appointed handyman warns Iver Hagen them for 'things worse than ghosts' and ever scarier things happen. Ma irrationally believes the house bad yet refuses long to have Gina examined by Dr. Werner, who has a patient Olive obsessed by similar trolls. By the time the pieces are fitted, it may be too late.

A scientific experiment in rapid-cell growth goes awry when a lab assistant steals the developed serum and injects it into his pregnant girl friend. The result is a child that grows through adulthood and will die within days, if a cure cannot be found.

Evan's visit to his great aunt Katherine's house turns eventful when he finds a jar marked "Monster Blood". He and his new friend, Andy, decide to try it out, but are horrified to find that it is growing.

Todd is obsessed with worms. He is planning to do his science project on them, along with playing a prank on his sister. However, it soon becomes apparent that Todd's wriggly friends may be turning against him.

When her family moves into a new house, Kat finds a sponge which appears to be alive, but no-one will believe her. After the discovery, the family is besieged by bad luck, and Kat is convinced the sponge is behind it.

Amy thinks her father has bought her the perfect gift: a new ventriloquist's dummy. However, it soon becomes apparent that there is more to this dummy than meets the eye.
