To preserve Japan’s territories, Coastal Cities sprung up, one after the other. Eventually, they became Marine Cities, and along with the expansion of sea-lanes to connect them, the need arose for a sizable staff to protect the seas. At the same time, maritime jobs were becoming more popular among women. Hence, the BLUE MERMAIDS had become every female student’s dream job.

The planned film trilogy retells the beginning of the story from Shuuichi Shigeno's original car-racing manga. When the Spirit World is flooded due to an unusual rainfall which overflows the River Sanzu (aka the River Styx), Lord Koenma senses an extremely powerful enemy. However, by the time Botan finds Yusuke, she's too weak to explain the situation. Yusuke and his friends are left in the dark about the new enemy, but not for long. Soon it is a battle for Earth between mere Spirit Detectives and the almighty king of the Netherworld.

When he is chased by a witch and runs away to the sea, his eyes are filled with the void! The next thing you know, your body shrinks and you're scurrying around like an ant on a stone slab. First, the movements of the characters are broken down into hundreds of still photographs, which are then colored, and then they are moved one by one in stop motion to create unrealistic actions. In addition to the method of creating unrealistic action by moving each image frame by frame, the film successfully combines live-action time-lapse photography to express the unique perspective imbalance, tropical color design, and obsession of the chase.
